Offensive Language no longer tolerated at SAFC home matches?

On the SAFC home page I notice that in the picture gallery which goes through various shots, along comes the ad for the South v Glenelg home match, the following slide is one stating that "Offensive Language and Behaviour will not be tolerated" and urges anyone that sees any of the said behaviour to contact a security official so that it can be dealt with.

Is this from the SANFL or is it a club initiated proposal?

My understanding is that yes you can be thrown out of an SANFL Ground for offensive language if its uttered in the Family Area where people sit to stay away from it, yet on the flip side I did think that was the point of the Family Area?

I realise that certain words offend people, yet I think its fairly unlikely that you will ever see people thrown out of the general area of the ground for saying the F or whatever word?

Nah good call I reckon - offensive language is not welcome anywhere in public. I was at Noarlunga a couple of years ago with my two young boys and some SA suppoter in the stand was swearing his heart out even though South were up by heaps at the time.

Happy for (alleged) offenders to get a warning in the first instance but after that any more bad language and out they go.

I went to Goolwa with my 8yo nephew to watch Modra play one day. He didn't play and Goolwa were beaten. The Goolwa coach (ex Glenelg rover - cant remember his name) was yelling the big "C" word at the opposition players and supporters. I suggested that it wasn't probably the right thing to say in front of young kids and he said he'd fix me up if I wanted - Big little man - he didn't last past that year and good riddance.

Though I didn't hear it at Adelaide on Saturday (maybe due to the PA issues or I may have just missed them) I reckon its similar or identical to a ground announcement heard at Elizabeth (CD v SA) the previous week, so it sounds to me like a League thing.

This is being publicised accross all clubs, can be found in signage at ground gates at all venues .. ie is not unique to SAFC.

Could be pre-planned or coincidence with a fan / player incident at Prospect

Sturt were playing Port at Unley back in 1999 I reckon the time was. I took my 3 year old son to the game and we met another mate who had brought his 5 year old daughter along too. We were over in the North Eastern pocket where the play ground is, the kids were happy, we were pumping Port and all was good. Then came along this a$$hole who looked like he belonged in the cast of the original Underbelly, who proceeded to take over the kids playground and launch the most offensive attack on the Port players and more so the umpires that I've ever heard at a game. I put up with it for a quarter before I asked him to move to another area. He came up to me nose to nose and told me if I didn't shut up he would cut my throat out. One of his mates came up to me and told me he'd just been released from gaol...I left the game and went to the pub to watch the rest on ABC TV.
If you need to be offensive and swear your guts out get the hell out of the family friendly areas. A good thing!

I think we can all agree on that, itd be nice if Weslo concentrated their resources in that area as opposed to hanging out and not moving from their current positions.
Or even better get some security guards that were fit enough to be able to continuously walk around and only settle in one spot if trouble is brewing like the police used to do.

This is a good idea. I think theres a difference between swearing and complete gutter trash that comes out of some peoples mouths. This week i am not taking my 10yr old son to norwood oval because of about 4 grown men that were there last year in front of the underground toilets who were just hurling abuse and complete fowl trash out of their mouths. Before anyone says about family friendly areas we were about 5 feet from there and at norwood oval theres not much to the family friendly area anyway, also people in the family friendly area were complaining about it to and these guys just abused them.

With the exception of Coopers Stadium, I've generally found the crowd behaviour at SANFL game to be pretty good anyway. It's common sense really, go to the game, enjoy the game, even have a bit of fun banter, but if you're going to act the goat, then on your bike.

I'm Australian I don't have to swear at the footy. I have too much respect for my mother and other ladies that like to enjoy the footy. I swear at other times, but disagree footy watchers should have to put up with the foul mouth of others. I think most even marginally educated people would be able to determine what might be offensive to others. It's pretty simple. Part of the problem is society consistantly lowering the "bar" on what's acceptable.

I think pretty much all of us have probably said something at the footy in the heat of the moment that we later think we wished we hadn't have said. Hopefully those days progressively become few and far between the older we get. I must admit my attitudes have hardened a bit since i started taking my own children to the footy but you get a sense of who the undesirables are and you steer clear of them. Rarely, given crowd numbers are fairly moderate now and most people are pretty decent, can you not find a good spot without any wankers around you.

Must admit, I haven't heard anything too over the top in terms of language in quite some time .. I know every now and then you experience some loon launch into a full blown outburst, but really believe that overall it's really a minority action, and one which indeed should be stamped out.

I might swear at the footy, but only to those I'm with and not in full ear shot of anyone else.

Dogs01 .. Sorry to hear of your experience at the Parade, I've never stood around in that area, but I know only too well we have our fair share of idiots .. Many of which, unfortunately, were on display last year when we played the Dogs at home.

I hope that when the time is right and you decide to bring your lad back to the Parade that neither of you are subjected to such behaviour.

There's swearing and there's swearing.

At a football match it is reasonable to expect a bit of low-level swearing. An occasional 'sh!t', 'b@stard' or 'w@nker'. Got a problem with this, stand in the family friendly area.

But to be dropping Fs and Cs every other word at maximum volume is another thing entirely.

Perhaps each ground needs a family-unfriendly area, acoustically insulated from the rest of the ground, where the riff-raff can swear like sailors with impunity?
