Perhaps he hasn't spent much time in the midfield because the forward line was more in need of attention?

Your right, Brett should be given an opportunity in the mid-field, because that's where he won his Magary Medal. I want him to have a go in the mid-field. But the chances of him playing in the mid-field are quite slim because we have Shaun and Peter Burgoyne, Adam Thomson, Danyle Pearce, Dom Cassisi, Kane Cornes, James Ezard, Steven Salopek, and even Michael Wilson who can play in the mid-field.

But you are absolutely right, Brett does need to play in the mid-field for him to reach his full potential.

The departures expected from Skilled Stadium in the coming weeks might begin unexpectedly with Andrew Mackie, the 22-year-old South Australian being courted by Port Adelaide after twice declining a new contract offer from Geelong.

Mackie is understood to have attracted interest from both South Australian clubs who are aware that he deferred contract negotiations with Geelong mid-season and as recently as a fortnight ago refused to consider a two-year offer from the Cats.

The financial terms of the contract offered by Geelong to the 2002 first-round draftee are believed to be well below his expectations and a combination of the opportunity to return home, assurances of regular games and the turbulence at Geelong are understood to have Mackie leaning towards a move.

The fact that Port finished 12th this season and therefore holds fifth pick in the pre-season draft is also a factor.

Mackie played 14 games this year for a total of 37 in four seasons, a modest return that is believed to have frustrated the versatile 192-centimetre player who won't negotiate with Geelong until a review of the football department is completed by chief executive Brian Cook. The review, which is likely to be completed by the end of this month, is widely expected to result in a major shake-up in the wake of the team's troubled season and failure to reach the finals.

"The Geelong offer has been declined at this stage," Mackie's manager Anthony McConville said yesterday.

"The season has come to its end, which is when we indicated we would be happy to start talking again, but I don't think negotiations are likely to begin until the air has cleared down there.

"I think the outcome of the review needs to be seen first, so that Andrew can be certain about what he might or might not be agreeing to."

assurances of regular games

37 games in 4 years, I have not seen a lot of this kid but what I have seen is that he will not demand an automatic selection in either the crows or powers best 22,

Hes played whole quarters on the ball but with minimal effect (hardly any possessions). Again, what i'm saying is, hes doing so well as a small forward, and why put him in the midfield when theres other guys like Pearce, S Burgoyne, Salopek etc etc.

you need regular time in the midfield not 1 1/4 every 4 weeks, he is a midfielder, he has been starved of opportunity and he is obviously not enjoying his footy as a small forward

I wouldn't support this trade from a Port perspective. I'd be wanting no less than Knights, Douglas or Maric.

The day Ebert pulls on a Crows jumper is a very sad day for the Port Adelaide Football Club.

I'm not sure if Port would have anyone they'd be willing to offload that the Cats would be interested in. The only one i can think of is Deluca, although i doubt Port would want to trade him given his potential. I can see them offering Lonie, Ezard, Walsh, Ware and possibly Lower (although probably not), but Geelong wouldn't go for any of them i'm sure (except Lower maybe). If not players, possibly Port's second pick, which is in the early 20's, but i think they'd be better off hanging onto that for the "super draft", to see if the Cats would want their 3rd pick (doubtful).

I agree, but if he wants out, and therefore wouldn't be committed to the club (and cant be convinced his future is at Alberton), then the club wouldn't really have much choice.

IIRC the Cats 3rd pick is already committed to a father and son pick up, the kid from Vic metro who won the medal at the U/18 Champs......
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If Pearce, S Burgoyne, and Thomson hadn't shown as much promise and improvement this year (and if Ebert hadn't shown such promise up forward), Brett may have been given more time in the centre, but if he was to play there more (and he hasn't been overly impressive when hes played in the midfield), it would be at the expense of those players.

It could also be argued that Johncock is wasted across half back for the Crows. Its all about team balance and also weighing up the needs of and development of other players at the club, and whats in the general best interests of the club. We've seen a similar situation with Ablett jnr at Geelong.

I've seen 4/5 Port games live this year, and i'm convinced that Choco has made the right call on Ebert.

Yes good point, i'm sure Port would offload Thurstans if the Cats wanted him, i dont think they would though with N Ablett, Hawkins, Mooney etc etc.

Yep i think you're right, so that would make it even more difficult for the trade to occur i'd say.

First point, Pearce plays more on the wing or across half forward rather then starting in the square, second point is look at sides like the eagles, they rotate approx 7-8 guys through their midfield per game, these days you need depth in your rotations....

Sure the crows play stiffy across HB because at this stage he does not have the engine to play in the midfield

In regards to Thomson, maybe he has blossomed with opportunity so why not provide the same opportunity to a young player that has actually won the Magarey medal playing as a midfielder

I also hear that some of the issues surrounding Pagan is he has lost Stick's support, Sticks is keen to draft Gibbs as the clubs #1 choice while Pagan has his sights on a key position player
