'Spida' opens Sydney door

PETER Everitt has split with Hawthorn, the ruckman unable to agree terms for a new contract.

The three-time All Australian is out of contract and wanted to sign a two-year deal, but the Hawks were prepared to offer him only one year.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said Everitt's playing talent would be missed but the Hawks wanted only players prepared to commit themselves to the club and the direction in which it was heading.

"Our meeting today was amicable and we will seek to get a trade that is suitable for both Peter and the club," Clarkson said today.

Everitt wanted to join Sydney last year but the Hawks held him to the final year of his contract.

The Swans again appear the club most likely to agree to the 32 year old demands for a multi-year deal.

Is he worth it for Sydney??

well its quite interesting really with SPIDA. he wanted to sign a 2 year deal at the HAWKS and i would have thought by doing that he was wanting to be part of helping the club go in the right direction. i mean he could have settled for the 1 year contract and moved on after that.

Not sure whether there's much truth to it, but I've heard several times that Spide looks for the optimum $$ (not saying there's anything wrong with that either) in his contract negotiations ... The whisper at the time he moved to the Hawks was that he actually wanted to come to the Crows but they baulked at the requested $900k per season ... As I said, grapevine talk that was never confirmed (nor denied) to the best of my knowledge.

honestly, the port faithful would burn the Alberton down if the famous ebert name ended up in the tri-colours

If this were to happen there would be a riot that even the cops couldn't control they would have to call in the SAS troops.

Very remote chance that this would go ahead IMHO. Brett's affairs are managed by his father and I dont think Russell could bring himself to negotiate with Adelaide about a contract

His Dad may want to see him get more of a go and maybe elsewhere that could be the case.

What I saw of him @ the showdown though may just give Port a wake up on this lad. Not to many players have beaten Johncock this year and he did it very well.

I have it on very good authority Brett Ebert has requested a trade away from Alberton and this has been encouraged by his father Russell.

Sick of the pressure Chocco is putting on him and how he is not allowing him to play in the midfield.

Has already held discussions with Hawthorn! (was a hawks supporter as a kid)

Him leaving Alberton will only happen if Port can be compensated fairly however....if not he will stay at Port but very reluctantly....remember where you heard this first

IMO i think he will stay in melbourne and probably at collingwood or the doggies. he earns too much outside of footy to move interstate :D

In terms of Brett's footy career I think that he would best if he moved away from Port Adelaide there would be the massive expectations lifted off his sholders if he went to a different club weather it be the Hawks, Crows or who ever.

If available I think the crows would have a crack at Ebert, he's 22, he's got leg speed and he can play forward or in the midfield

PortAdelaideProud

for a club that has lost Carr, Stevens, Schofield, James and Francou in recent years and has been screaming out for more depth in the midfield, why has he not been given the opportunity?, stating the obvious but he was the best player in the sanfl couple years ago, at a young age as a on baller

Ebert does not look like he is enjoying his footy to me

PAP please correct me if I'm wrong but I was thinking the other day about where did Ebert play when he won his Margarey medal in 03 I was certian it was as a midfielder. Why hasn't he been given the opportunity at AFL. Get rid of those Burgoyne Brothers they give up too easily

I don't watch too many power games but I have watched games and the power has been smashed in the midfield and Ebert does not even get a ten minute run in the gutts

I think he is a pissed off footballer

Hes been given time in the midfield this year but hasn't performed that well. Hes best suited to a small forward role at Port, hes a great mark for his size and is capable of kicking a bag of goals, although is sometimes hindered by inaccuracy. With the development of Pearce, Thomson, S Burgoyne etc this year, i certainly believe Port has done the right thing by developing Ebert as an opportunist forward.

what 2 minute runs at the end of each 1/4, your kidding me, the boy is a boy midfielder and the power has been screaming for midfielders, at times they had to play Chad Cornes on the ball

he needs to spend time in the gutts and his coach needs to have the courage to run him through the gutts consistently
