Selection dilemma for the Freo game

Postby FD88 » Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:20 pm

With Hentschel out for a month and now Bock for an undetermined amount of time, the selection panel's hand is going to be forced with regards to talls we aren't all convinced about. Obviously Stevens comes straight back in so that's one change, but then we start getting to names like Moran, Sellar and Gill. Will the club go with Gill after a disappointing pre season but a decent return with North on the weekend, or Moran, whose intensity has been questioned? Does Sellar get a look in? We were hurt by Stevens' absence against the saints but gaining him back at the expense of Bock means we're still short of that third option, so we'd have to station Alf in defense for the entire game. Meanwhile we lack the hard leading forward to hit up through the corridor when in doubt.

There has also been a suggestion to bring Griffin into the side and use Tippett as a permanent forward but again, the hard leading option?

Which way do we go?

Does it matter? Freo have no heart.

Crows by plenty no matter who you take to Perth.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Not that we need (or want) reminding, but we play woeful footy at Subiaco.

We belted the Eagles at AAMI last year then got absolutely smashed by an even weaker WC outfit at Subi just seven weeks later. We lost by a point the last time we played your mob over there, although that was two years ago. Then you've got that famous 80+ point drubbing in 2006 when we were flying. There are just so many bad memories us supporters associate with the ground; I can't convince myself that this will be anything but a tight tussle (yet it has no right to be).

I would expect Stevens in to replace Bock and Gill to replace Henschel.

Knights is also out, so his replacement might be Cook, Shirley or someone else perhaps.

I know Bock's suspension is 'indefinite', but long will that really be?
Until he's performed his 50 hrs community service?

To me, "indefinite" = > 1 week. otherwise they'd say "1 week". I'm thinking at least 2-3 :(

I think with this many changes I'd leave Cook for now and look at someone like Symes for Knights.

Gill and Stevens for Bock and Hentschell IMO

i'd suggest gill for hentschel, symes for knights and stevens for bock. freo don't really have the traditional three tall forwards so adelaide may be able to have stevens as the second defensive tall. if cover is needed, moran will probably come in.

Yeah the record is pretty bad at Subi and I'm expecting a fairly even match.

Freo get plenty of the ball, but their skills let the opposition off the hook and also provide goal scoring opportunities.
The wide open spaces should give the Crows plenty of room to move, but is the forward line good enough to kick a winning score?

It's an important game with a very tough match coming up against Geelong in round 4.

In: Griffin, Stevens and Cook.

I would be pretty happy with that. Got a feeling they will bring Symes in over Cook though.

I really hope Stevens is good to go or we are in trouble. We missed him Friday night but we will miss him even more with Bock out.

In: Stevens, Symes, Griffin
Out: Bock, Hentschel, Knights

I wouldn't mind seeing Cook instead of Symes but we need Symes' expreience and hardness. I don't even rate Griffin but he's played the best SANFL of his career and I realyl don't want Gill back in.

The squad is:

B: Johncock, Rutten, Doughty
HB: McLeod, Stevens, Symes
C: Dangerfield, Thompson, Mackay
HF: Reilly, Gill, Douglas
F: Porplyzia, Walker, Edwards
R: Maric, van Berlo, Goodwin
I/c: Tippett, Griffin, Shirley, Vince, Otten, Sellar, Petrenko

Into 25: Gill, Griffin, Sellar, Shirley, Stevens, Symes

Out of 22: Bock (suspended), Hentschel (knee), Knights (eye)

Straight from afc.com.au. I'd trim Griffin, Shirley and Sellar from the bench to give us our 22.

That list suggests there is some uncetainty about one of the bigger guys.
I don't know that I'd put Walker at FF yet, especially with the present game plan.

I know they rarely line up as named, but I wouldnt mind seeing Walks given a crack at it, especially if he's flanked by the names alongside him

I agree there is a bit of support there.
What worries me is him getting pulped, because the ball being slow coming in gives the opposition time to double team him, and squelch him before he has had time to muscle up enough or the experience to see it coming...

PS: "Thu Apr 09, 2009 8:27 pm" is the time put on the post - it is actually 6.58pm...

That sort of thing still happens to Matty Lloyd at times, it's the less attractive part of the game forwards have to become accustomed to unfortunately, remember the whole year is a learning process for him - Good or bad.
