OK I am not a sturt supporter but this is my take on it.
At the point in time they were selected. John McDonald was the player with the most runs on the board however his attitude to defensive work was poor or at least looked poor. He struggled to hit a simple target over a short distance. McDonald seen as a one dimentional player who relied on being explosive but at AFL level he would not be explosive. So really at best he was going to be a fringe AFL player.
Brodie Martin however was showing arial skills, pace as quick as they come and a hardness for the contest. Kicking over a long distance was suspect. Unlikely to suceed but if he did he could become a genuine AFL footballer.
So McDonald more likely to be a fringe footballer at best verses Martin likely not to make it but if he did he could be a good AFL footballer. Martin came with foot speed that the crows were lacking.
