That too. But a lot of young kids dont have the awareness they should. Back when i was 15 or 16 playing a trail standing Ricky O'Loughlin every time i went to chase him i was focused on his number and would get cleaned up every time...hard...but for some unknown reason to even me never had perriferal vision...in that one game alone i was shirtfronted about 7 or 8 times, no exaggeration...and thats when my coach told me if i keep playing like that i would be retired from footy at 20, and wouldnt get A grade games for my own safety. Over the next year i worked on it in the B grade and got myself back into the As a more aware, thus better player.

Adelaide Hawk wrote:This "making the ball the object" caper is a load of bunkum. Sometimes in footy, you bump or tackle an opponent in order to push the ball clear for a team mate. You don't always bump to win the footy yourself. Rules of the game says you CAN do it.

Let's face it. This is a new interpretation from the AFL. Every time they introduce something new, the first player reported for it gets a massive penalty in order to set the example. Wait for July to come along, the same incident won't get anywhere near the same penalty.

Bad luck the West Coast kid got injured, but when the day comes a player is not allowed to do what Maxwell did, the game is not worth watching.

The game is boring now....what a joke the game has become....rather go and watch a local game anyday and watch that crap....

Its looking that way isnt it

Collingwood are going to appeal the suspension and have released a strong announcement claiming that no tribunal in their right mind could come to that decision...and i agree...even tho i hate collingwood and think maxwells an annoying pest of a player

I never really watched AFL prior to about 95, being 7 and all, so i missed the really hard footy. But how i see it now is if the players play with the skill they have now combined with controlled aggression it would only be better for the game.

Back in the 1970s, a guy named Joe Tex did a song titled "Ain't gonna bump no more no big fat woman". I wish I had the skills to do something on youtube using footage of players getting bumped and this song :)

He got 4 on appeal in case some people didnt know.

It is harsh but like i said earlier the AFL have made it very clear in the last couple of years anything head high will be punished. They tend to be far harsher early on in the season. The fact McGinnity has ended up with a broken jaw and a plate in his head did not help Maxwell either.

I dont think it is a fair punishment but it was always on the cards IMO.

I agree. If you look at the pic in the middle below the very humorous netball one of the incident you can see that the point of contact was the kids left shoulder. Since when has that been illegal? It is called a hip and SHOULDER!!!

As everyone can probably tell im a bit pissed at this softness... :)

I know what it is called and the "Kid" has a name.

It was head high, watch the replay again properly and remember he got a broken jaw which does not come about by getting hit in the shoulder.

I agree it is soft but once again the players have been warned, not only did Maxwell hit him front on and high but he ran over the football to make contact which makes it clear the footy was the last thing from his mind. That is a clear no no for the tribunal these days..

A lot of you would love Cornesy's take on it on 5AA tonight

Words to the effect that the "soft" part of the whole incident was Maxwell not being willing to put his head over the footy and get it himself. Instead choosing to run over McGinity when he wasn't looking as the soft option!

Thoughts .....

PS: Some common sense from Dean Bailey:

Bailey said he had no need to remind his team to play within the rules and also defended the tactic as a crowd-pleasing facet of the game.

"If you just go after the ball you'll be okay," Bailey said. "The bump's going to exist anyway, you are always going to have some of those instances in the game.

"As long as you've got your head over the ball and you get the footy I think the game will continue to have some physical aspect.
In between signatures .....

It's a terrible decision. If Maxwell had've taken posession of the ball he would've been doing his team a disservice as he was going away from Collingwood's goal and by shepherding he allowed his teammate to take the ball and move forward quickly, he couldn't have handled the situation any better. There's no rule saying you have to take possession of the ball just because you're near it, this 'running past the ball' crap that the tribunal gives out is a joke.

These types of decisions from the tribunal are a blight on the game and unfortunately, it's only going to get worse.

Yes, well I won't risk the ire of the Bays fans by mentioning how hard Cornesy was on the field ;)

And really, what else can Bailey say without being hauled over the coals? (another area the AFL shoots themselves in the foot IMHO, but I digress ..)

It wasnt Maxwells shoulder that hit MCGINNITY in the jaw...it was a head clash...

and YOU ARE ALLOWED TO RUN PAST THE BALL!!! Or you are in every league ive played in...

its called shepharding a player off the ball...been around since footy was invented...why should the suits that played hard back in the day but became soft in old age be allowed to change the rules...that is like changing the constitution...
