Cassisi provides so much to the power midfield, he allows cornes a break, a chance to get the ball himself and for him to be so good (obviously not all his work tho). Newman is an out an out gun small defender who penetrates the lines with his kicks and can go into the midfield and play a role there...

maxwell i think is courageous and has his good games, obviously a good leader but i dont think he plays good enough football himself or consistently to be named captain, but thats IMO

i couldnt really agree with you more there mate, newman is a gun defender a bit like joel bowden when he was in his prime, and cassisi always racks up the possesions and is very decent footballer, i beleive they both would play in any team! maxwell maybe not but he can play a bit and might be a good choice in the long run.

Least setanta wasnt the captain of the club, and the leadership group have handed down the consiquences accordingly. As for maxwell, hes meant to a be a role model for the younger players of the game and getting yourself booked on your first game as captain isnt a good example to set. Especially with no prem points or final on the line, really really stupid, but you would expect that from collingwood wouldnt you?

Just takin the p*ss i couldnt care less, my team have their own problems to worry about, like a major sponsor for one! any takers?

You can say I'm biased, although I think I'd react the same way if it was any other player from any other team, but Maxwell's bump was as technically correct as you get in football. That McGinnity kid is unlucky, but that's the nature of footy.

Maxwell should cop the three game ban, because the AFL will use this incident to set the tone for the rest of the year - you're just better off not going for the hip and shoulder anymore.

I'm with you Quichey.

Must be a hard decision for players to decide whether to bump a player or not.

I haven't seen it but there is certainly talk about it.

Doesn't seem to matter if it is a fair bump and accidental contact to the head, the AFL are gonna stomp on it

Maybe McGinnity is a college boy................

Maybe McGinnity is O'Hailpin's mate and Maxwell is Cameron Cloke's mate.......... PAYBACK YOU IRISH GITS

For those of us who want to take a breath while reading:

I think the thing that probably got Maxwell in trouble was not the fact that the West Coast lad got a broken jaw from the bump (which was bloody awesome by the way !!) but the fact that Maxwell's sole objective was to take the player and not go the ball.

From the footage I saw, Maxwell was closest to the ball with the West Coast lad running along the boundary after the ball and another Collingwood player behind the Eagles lad. Maxwell then deviated away from attacking the ball and went for the bump instead of making the ball his objective. If his Collingwood team mate was in front of him it would be a fair sheppard but the fact that his team mate was behind the West Coast lad makes it worse I reckon.

Put simply, if he took his eyes of the ball and made contact with the opposition when he was the closest Magpie to the ball, I think the report was warranted. Not sure that 3 games was the appropriate suspension, maybe just deserved 1 week. Of course, all just IMHO !!!

I agree

I think the 3 weeks was a little harsh but the AFL have made it known for a couple of years now if you run past the ball to make contact with the opposition then you are in trouble..

Agree with all of you re Maxwell
Dont think it deserved 3 weeks at all
The problem has come down to the fact the kid got a broken jaw and Maxwell had 80-odd carryover points
If he had pulled out of the bump everyone would have been on his back about pulling out of a contest

I think the game allowed for excessive rough stuff in years gone by, and things had to be reeled in a bit, however the powers-that-be have gone way over the top unfortunately, IMHO.

Im sure Maxwell's intention wasn't to break a bloke's jaw, but to clear a path for his teammate to collect the loose ball (Hell if he'd slowed down to lessen the impact, the Eagles boy would have run straight past him, he had to go at pace to join the contest) ... As mentioned above, the newer generations have grown up in this era of cleaner footy and aren't as skilled at viewing traffic that might be headed in their direction.

This suspension sux imho.

If they take that sort of thing out of amateur footy im stuffed coz i love the old run past the ball and clear the way for other players. It lifts the team to see someone not worry about possessions and sacrificing his body for the team.
