As leader of the Woodville Cheer Squad in our final year I really wanted us to out with a bang for our last game

We pulled out "Big Bertha" (32m x 10m) or what was left of it having last been used in 1989 and we resurrected it

It was a huge job, I remember getting home at 5.30am Saturday Morning then rising at 9am to get it to the Adelaide Oval.

It was the start of a sureal, sad and yet in a warped way I don't expect anyone from the other 8 clubs to comprehend, a positive day.

No worries mate, I still have it on my hard drive too if your recorder breaks down.
Its shown at the quarter time break (with a teaser before the game).

I really wanted to get to the last day as I'd been to a lot of Torrens games over the years with my step dad and my family was good friends with Ian "Scruff" Hanna (it was my Uncle's pool he broke his kneck in) but I think North had an important game that day also.

PS The Woodville banner looked a touch bigger than the Torrens banner.

I reckon that's his grandson (fair dinkum)! When you have grand children it's probably time to at least think about retiring from football.

No it says how much better Port, North and Glenelg players were in being committed to playing as teams, following coaches instructions and working for success compared to Woodville and the other clubs in 1990.

Success jut doesn't happen it is earned.

Woodville had played the previous two finals series before Ebert arrived. Players lost from those sides were replaced with the likes of John Klug, Richard Champion, Allen Jakovich. Pretty fair cattle.

Port missed finals series under Ebert with a side including Craig Bradley, Stephen Clifford, Martin Leslie, Russell Johnston, Tim Evans etc etc. Also pretty fair cattle who I'm sure played to instructions.

Ebert coached eight League seasons for three finals appearances.

To be fair to Russ - he coached Port during what was probably its toughest couple of years.

The club almost went broke twice and there was an exodus of players due to retirements, pay cuts and the VFL.

1983: A disaster with players falling down like ten-pins. Leslie only played 4 games, Johnno about half-a-dozen, Evans missed the first two months of the year, then Bradles misses the last two months of the minor round to tour England with the Australian Under-19s cricket team. And there were a lot more missing, too.

1984: Lost a heap of players at the end of 1983. Somehow rebounded to win the minor round. The last hurrah for what was left of the Cahill era.

1985: Was 1983 revisited, except it was a more inexperienced side.

1986: Did a great job in leading a talented, young team to the finals.

1987: Disappointing finals campaign, cruelled by five posters against Glenelg in the 1SF.

All in all, I think Russ did a pretty good job in his five years in charge, especially considering the challenges he faced. There's no doubt that he layed the foundations for the decade of dominance that followed.

His reign at Woodville, well, that's a different kettle of fish...
