I doubt McGuiness can recapture his form of 2 years ago. It's hard for any player to miss a year of footy and step right back into it.

Thats a fair point you raise, and one I've spent a lot of time pondering ... I also think it's hard to recapture form after a decent period out of the game, although I think it's more likely he'll find it, just might take a while.

If it were my choice alone, Kris Massie would be captain of Norwood in 2009.

Tough call on Gags who, in my opinion anyway, showed the way this year. His performance against Port in the finals was inspirational.

Just to clarify my statement, I like my leaders to be a certain style of player. Although very pleased to have Gallagher on the playing list, for my money he doesn't work hard enough when he doesn't have the ball. If you want an example, just observe what Gallagher is doing compared with a Massie or a Weatherald when they don't have the ball. Also, Gags tends to be a little indirect when going forward, although I do agree his finals performance against Port was one of his better ones.

I think it's a stretch to call McGuinness a recruit when he just took a year off to travel. Apart from him, Norwood was paying the wages of none of the other 7 in 2008, and is paying the wages of all of them in 2009; seems like a fair definition of 'recruit' to me.

Bummer. I read this headline on this thread after a month or so off the site on 'most valuable norwood recruit' and was thinking we were going to argue the merits of Ross Dillon v Stephen Kerley v David Armour v Brian Adamson v John Wynne v Neville Roberts v Bruce Winter etc etc

Out of interest, I vote Kris Massie, since he's stepping from AFL level and should have the best fitness etc.

Can someone else please put up a voting option for 10 great Norwood men who came to the club between 1970 - 1990 and I'd like to debate that.

Probably in the top 5 SANFL players at his best, BUT Magarey is a bit of a stretch as i don't think he will play enough games due to been injury prone.

I think Norwood will be happy if they can get 10-15 minor round games and then be fit for the finals out of him.

By my count, he played 128 games (88 AFL, 40 SANFL) in the 7 seasons from 2002-2008 since coming over from Carlton. That'd be an average of 18 games per season. Not a perfect injury run, but not terrible by any means. I can certainly think of players on the Norwood roster in 2009 with worse injury records!

There may well be players who will provide greater value long-term (Campbell, maybe Hughes) but if the question's asked in terms of most valuable in 2009, Massie gets my vote.

The happiest guy from all of this recruiting must be James Gallagher. Having Massie, Campbell, Weatherald, Hughes etc to share the load means that he will discover what taking a breather, or resting in the forward line, actually means; you only have to go back to 2007 and before, and Gags was never allowed to leave the centre square lest a terrible situation get any worse.

When Graham Molloy and Damien Nygaard left Norwood at the end of 1969, Robert Oatey was desperate for some experienced players to help develop the plethora of young talent at the club. He recruited Don Roach and brought reserves coach John McInnes into the league squad, but it was the recruitment of John Wynne who was pure gold.

The work he did and the leadership be displayed, both on and off the field, was a major ingredient in Norwood success in the 70s and 80s. What the club wouldn't give for a 22 year old John Wynne to walk into the club right now.
