January 09, 2009 SYDNEY Swans midfielder Nic Fosdike has retired due to an ongoing knee injury.
“"What was impressive about Fossy was his ability to play a team role, the way he was able to embrace that role was a real credit to him.” – John Longmire The Sydney Swans coaching coordinator praises Nic Fosdike. Fosdike, whom the Swans took with their first pick in the 1998 national draft, played 164 games for the Swans, kicking 66 goals and winning a premiership medal after making his debut in 1999.
"Due to an ongoing knee injury and following some good honest discussions with the coaches, I’ve made the decision to retire," Fosdike said.
"I realised it was going to be a difficult year managing the injury and I wouldn’t be able to contribute at the standard I expect.
"I've had an amazing 10 years at the Sydney Swans and I’m retiring as a life member and a premiership player, achievements I am extremely proud of."
Swans coach Paul Roos and coaching coordinator John Longmire each praised Fosdike, describing him as a "team player".
“From the moment Nic walked into the club he always gave 100 per cent and gained the respect of his peers, coaches and the opposition,” Roos said.
“I am sure the 2005 grand final, when Nic was in the top four or five players on the day, was one of his greatest achievements and a career highlight."
Longmore, meanwhile, said that Fosdike had "tried to be as good a player as he could possibly be".
"Last season was frustrating for him because his injuries prevented him from being able to have that impact," he said.
"Unfortunately it means he is at the end of his footy career but he moves on to the next chapter.
"What was impressive about Fossy was his ability to play a team role, the way he was able to embrace that role was a real credit to him.
"His ability to run games out was also outstanding, his work ethic, he was a great ball getter and his ability to have an impact off the bench in that team role in more recent seasons, and in particular in the 2005 grand final where he was outstanding.
he was not far off the norm smith in 2005. so he may come home and play for SHOCS. in div 1 huge recruit if so.
