Where to now for the Eagles

Postby eaglehaslanded » Wed Dec 24, 2008 8:06 am

Where to now for the Eagles - after the much publicised drafting of Skipworth to Essendon and Jacobs to Carlton what do the Eagles do now. Do the Eagles indeed have a plan b. Are there any more recruits on the horizon or did we bank everything on Skippy.

There are not to many SANFL sides that would not have liked to have had the signature of Jay Cheep on their playing list for 2009! Very handy pick up for the Eagles!

The other advantage that the Eagles have is that they havent had such a large turnover of their list as some of the other SANFL clubs have and that has to be a good positive for stability in the side, no doubt after Christmas - New Year when training resumes several more names will be officially added to the list!

EHL - as our CEO has stated in his open letter to all members on our website and as i put in my preseason news Chris will inform all members of the ins and outs as soon as the final make up of the squad is finalised.

Skippy was signed and sealed for us if not in the AFL and we announced so to inform members/supporters.

Where to now - back up the ladder where we belong!!!

Best Wishes for the festive season to you and yours EHL

I read that email with interest CD (If I am correctly reading between the lines then it sounds as though the club does have some contingency plans re Skippy) I am eagerly awaiting the names to be added to the list then.

One positive is that we don't have as many outs this season so signs of stability is good to hear.

Great to hear that Rhett is training the house down that can only be good for the boys from Oval Ave.

Merry Xmas CD and all other Eags supporters this festive season.

Enjoy the break and bring on season 2009 - GO THE EAGLES !!!

EHL...we have a heap of outs again, most of whom are not in our tier one or two groups...eg the following all played league footy for us last year - Dennis Redden, Jono Lee, Daniel Roberts, Jake Pavlich, James Stewart (disappointing that one), Adam Klun (had something more to offer), Nick Malinovski (I think), add them to those already departed in Craig Gogoll, Biagi, Ben Schwarze, Joel Mackie, Gavin Coleville and Chris Hall drafted it is about our usual turnover.
Other than a couple of exceptions, the above list is why we finished sixth. We have retained who we wanted and I know we are still working on additional key players so we need to nail a couple of them. Given the revised structure of the competition a lot of these chaps had to go to make way for our juniors who have to take a big step next season.

I've had a look at the players who left the club after 2005 and there are some good players in that lot:

James Angus
Scott Freeborn
Brad Williams
Chad Dawe
Chris Martin
Luke Peel
Spiros Darzanos
Mark Stevens
Dale Ellis
Josh King
Fergus Watts
Mathew Stokes
Brett O'Hara

By this list, all of these players did not play another League match with the Eagles and did so in 2005. My point being that even with such a turnover of players, things can still improve. And that list overall is better than the list of players above (with no disrespect at all to Colville, who is a club legend)

This is the amount of players each year since 2001 who did not play another match after those years:
2001: 11
2002: 3
2003: 13 - Brett Burton is one of those players
2004: 7 - two of these players are Biglands and Robert Shirley
2005: 14
2006: 19 - two of these players are Nathan Bock and Chris Knights
2007: 11 - two of these players are Bernie Vince and Robert Fiacchi
2008: 13 - per your list above

So, Jackal, you are spot on the money regarding the usual turnover of players. Hopefully Robbie Fiacchi (just two games in the past 3 seasons) and Cicolella can stay injury free, so that will counter the outs a bit.

Jackal is spot on as usual , and seeing how we have slipped off the pace over the last 2 years , we should be working our rears off right up to round 1 if thats what it takes to land the " RIGHT " recruits . I dont want a final list until then because we need to work longer and smarter at this if we are to catch back up to the Dogs again . And hears a thought ........... CD2 ... get the Board to use the WHOLE salary cap this season !! Talk about a handicap !

holden78 could you please explain in detail how you know the Eagles did not spend upto their salary cap limit for 2008. Some facts and figures would help justify your comment.

As per another thread it seems as though Westbrook & Inkster are heading back to Oval Ave. One wonders how much value they will bring to this playing group. I believe westy to be the more valuable of the 2 - Inks is a little past it at this level as he has too many injury concerns.

Inkster won't be playing. He's just getting his fitness up to speed to be the league runner this year.
