North v Norwood Rd 17 2006

From the Advertiser:

Jackman stands tall

ZAC MILBANK

NORWOOD'S Nick Jackman has become accustomed to tackling opponents much taller than him this season.
And against the multiple towers looming inside North Adelaide's attacking half tomorrow, it will be no different. "All year we've been playing a bit under height against slightly taller forward lines," said Jackman, who has been the Redlegs' most consistent defender in 2006. "We figure if we can compete pretty hard in the air and bring it to ground then we can beat them at ground level. We haven't really confronted a major problem with our height so far."

It might be a different story at Prospect though.

Ken Farmer Medallist Daniel Hargraves, gun recruit Clint Alleway and Crow Ian Perrie have all been named inside coach Andrew Jarman's attacking 50m arc. And then there is Nick Gill. Such is the luxury afforded to Jarman, Gill is likely to start in the centre square as a roaming midfielder. If his matchwinning feats are required up forward, Jarman can always shift the "Emu" to cater for his needs.

Should Gill end up playing there, Jackman would relish the chance of quelling the Port Melbourne recruit. "He's (Gill) obviously the gun centre half-forward of the competition, so he's always a good challenge," Jackman, 187cm and 86kg, said. "I played on Luke Cowan last week who was a State forward and enjoyed that so if it works out that way it would be great.

"If not, I'm happy to give whoever gets the job a hand."

Jackman's job, and that of his fellow defenders, will be made easier if enough pressure is applied on the Roosters further up the ground. "It's harder when sides move the ball quickly and get the ball down there," Jackman said. "If a side's bringing it down with space and time it's pretty easy for any forward line so if our on-ballers can put enough pressure on, then I think our backline can sustain it."

Norwood included Crows draftee Darren Pfeiffer at the expense of Power-listed defender Matt Thomas, who was called up for AFL duty.

North made just one change, elevating defender Josh Coulter for his first game this season in place of Dean Howard (ankle).

The game is between North and Norwood yet the entire article was about one player!

That's contemporary journlism. Nobody talks about the match any more. Back in the 60s and 70s, footy writers were ex-players who only talked about the match they were watching. These days, articles are written by journalists who know little about the game and ex-players who only offer their opinions. Nothing has improved in footy over 30 years .. nothing.

Great effort by the Redlegs today, easily the more superior side today, the final scoreboard flattered North.

I've got some great pics of the day that'll take a while to get up * as I'm trying to coordinate my daughters pyjama party at the same time.

Well done Norwood, a great display (and a confusing display after being at the Bay Oval a month ago, I'll post more about that later).

PS Great to catch up with so many Norwood supporters today including Contstance Perm, Manny, Tazz and CA.

Damn Norwood stuffing my tips. Damn North losing to stuff my tips up. What did the Roosters do have a party with the grog squad celebrating 40 years of the groggies?

I think it was a massive win by Norwood today...! They are on a roll..! I also think when it gets down to a goal or less, It becomes luck. To do it twice in two weeks....? Well done Legs.... I thought your season was on the line the last couple of weeks and you shone through...! Respect.....

For it to come down to a goal today flattered North. No luck involved for Norwood. Easily the better side on the day and deserved the win.

I'll have to disagree after seeing Glenelg 90 points in front of Norwood at half time about 4 weeks ago.

43 Fu@#ing free kicks, North didn't play their best footy today, but FFS, 43 frees to one side in a game of footy, as bad as North were, I can't remember one side getting so many soft bloody frees in one game, the umpires were an absolute disgrace today, any one who thought they were bad last week, that looked text book compared to this week.

Welcome to Our world, We've been putting up with biased, almost blatant cheating for most of the year. I am sure that some crusty old wankers in the musty corridors of the SANFL made a pact at the start of the year to try & make sure that We don't make the finals this year!

Doesn't affect us one iota, provided we beat the teams below us and fighting for the final two spots over the next six weeks....

We lose to them and we can only blame ourselves, no one else.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

2006 stats up to Rd 17:

Centrals average 19.9 frees per game where their opposition averages 18.7 frees per game.

Hardly something to complain about surely??
