West announce new Captain

Postby redandblack » Thu Nov 27, 2008 5:35 pm

Media release by the West Adelaide Football Club.

"The West Adelaide Football Club is pleased to announce Ryan Ferguson is the new Club Captain. Ryan made a huge impact in his first season at the Club which included winning the Steve Hamra Medal for the League Best & Fairest. As previously announced, Ryan signed a 2 year deal mid season.

2008 Captain, Nathan Brown has announced his retirement from the SANFL due to family commitments which have necessitated a return to Melbourne."

Great appointment by the Bloods.

Now, before anyone says that I might have a slight bias here, I'll happily defend my contention that Ferguson was the best CHB in the league last season.

As a serious question, where did each team's CHB finish in your B & F?

Ryan's appointment as captain recognises his efforts as a player and a leader in his first season with West Adelaide.

I stand by what I said :D

i'd agree,

as for chb wouldn't 'one of the best in the league' be better to say than the best ?

Got to disagree here, I think you've been wishy-washy on the whole Ferguson question all year.

Topsy, I suspect you're correct, as usual.

I'll try to ramp it up a bit from now on 8)

ok, who did he have to beat to win it ? basically no one, hollands retired, hassan did a knee, dangerfield played every now & then, which means to be brutally honest there wasn't much left apart from brown & cupido

Not very charitable, bayman.

A key defender rarely wins a B & F at any club, so when it happens, it's noteworthy. When I said he was the best CHB during the season, most of the people disagreeing probably didn't know who he was.

Some of our football journalists might have been in that company too, judging by them leaving him out of their Team of the Year.

Winning the B & F and being appointed captain just confirms that I was around the mark with my judgement. I've rarely seen a player with as much courage, a judgement many Centrals fans who watched him at Elizabeth this year agreed with.
All of that doesn't mean I'm right, but subsequent events have shown my original statement had some basis to it. :D

These are two different subjects, bayman.

Firstly, there's not much point saying someone is 'one of the best' if he's the best :D

Secondly, winning a B & F at any club at any time is a hard-won achievement. To do it as a key defender is particularly noteworthy.

Thirdly, this subject has been good fun all along :D

Fourthly, congratulations to Ryan - a great appointment.

Fifthly, I respect your thoughts. Between you and me, your opinion on this matter is one of the best :D

Congrats to Ryan i think he will be a good captain for the club and will lead by his actions more so than words.

McKenzie did in 2006, when he was rightly positioned as CHB in the Team of the Year. You and other West fans are well within your rights to feel a bit aggrieved that Ferguson was not CHB this year, and us Eagles fans are stumped why McKenzie was named there this year.

Ferguson is in good company though, and you can only feel that he will get his recognition as one of the best players in the compeition like McKenzie has. In 2005/06 he wasn't the standout player in the team, now he is.

Very true :D

The difference was that his opponent had more chances than most to get it and didn't. :D

Very true.

That means his opponent had more chances to get the footy, but hardly got it at all.

I am not an eagles fan spelly but i too was stumped as to why he was named there when he hardly spent anytime there for the whole season. He deserved to be in the team just not at CHB IMHO. That honour should've gone to Ferguson or McLeay.
