Egan's playing future in doubt

November 12, 2008 GEELONG centre half back Matthew Egan's playing future in the AFL is in grave doubt because of a chronic foot injury.

The Cats released a statement today saying his future is "uncertain" and "doubtful" following the latest medical report on his injured navicular.

Egan met with a specialist this week to assess the progress he has made on the injury sustained in round 22, 2007.

The Cats says the 25-year-old All-Australian player has limited motion in the injured area.

Egan announced himself as a quality performer during the 2007 season when he earned selection to the All-Australian team.

He missed Geelong's drought-breaking title win last year before sitting out the entire 2008 season.

Massive blow for Egan perhaps but not for the Cats perhaps as Harry Taylor has stepped in for him admirably. Terrible blow for the young fella and I hope that this doesn't prove to be the end of a promising career. Makes me even madder about Nathan Ablett who just walks away on two good legs.

Yes REB if only you could give Egan one of Abletts feet and you would regain a very good CHB.

Maybe we sold our soul for 2007 and now the normal Geelong 5hit is back on again. Oh well, only 43 more years to go!

Dissapointing story for a really good player! I think we will see footballers playing life cut shorter and shorter in future, due the pace of the game and these injuries which seem to be simple in nature but can as we see here cut a plares career short. I feel the days of the 200-300 game players are fast coming to an end and we will see fewer and fewer of them.

"Moderate inconvenience for cats." might be more accurate.
Massive blow for the player though.

I think it is a massive blow for both the club (losing a AA CHB) and the player (possibly ending such a promising career).

I wasn't demeaning his quality as a player, but I don't think he would have made the difference against Hawthorn this year.
My point was that the Cats are well equipped to cover the loss of a good player, and it won't have a huge impact on them.
So the emphasis should be on the big loss to the player himself.

Was always on the cards earlier this year when they declared a foot injury would have him out for over a season.
I feel for the lad, even if he came back he'd never be close to the same player.
A blow for the Cats 12 months ago but not now.
Gives us another spot to pick up a youngster which are at a premium in the next few years.
In the meanwhile I'll get my little avatar to do a few more push ups in preperation for next season.

You never can tell. With Egan taking the biggest forward that freed up our back half to generate a lot of run. A lot of times this year we seemed to generate a lot of possession but we didn't control the corridor and that came back to bite us on Grand Final day IMO.
