Crawford signs on for one more year - then changes mind

Postby Mr66 » Sat Nov 08, 2008 9:05 pm

Shane Crawford signed on for another year with Hawthorn last week then
told the club on Friday (7th) that tendinitis had forced him to quit.

isnt the final list Lodgement on the 31st of october, so the draft order is worked out??? does that mean they will have one player less on their list next year. because you cant Upgrade rookies for Retirements?

I'm not certain here, but i'd say they'd just have one more pick at the end of the draft, or if they skip that, maybe an extra one in the PSD.

The other point is wouldn't Crawfs salary for 09 be included is the cap ?

Thats a good question, going by the article at the top of the thread, he apparently had signed a contract. I guess as he retired, Hawthorn may try to follow the Crows' lead with McGregor who's salary i think may not be included in the AFC's salary cap for next year due to retirement, not a club decision.

Even if Crawf played next season he would have been on the veterans list- I think their part of their salary isnt part of the cap? (correct me if I am wrong).

Anyway that doesnt matter- Cheers Crawf for a great career. A true champ of the game.

yeh, i dont get this veterans list thing? if there is any one out there that can elaborate on the subject, please do.

what qualifies a veteran?
does the player have to be at one club for X amount of years before being eligable, or is it just be in the league for X amount of years??

and does a rookie listed players salary count??

and does the club pay any NSW institue kids anything?

Shattered wouldn't adequately describe my feelings on this. What a truly great career. Absolute champion of the game and he deserved to go out on top. I am struggling to imagine Hawthorn without Shane Crawford. The club will be poorer for his retirement no doubt.

Now whilst I only saw a snippet of the interview Shane gave WWOS this morning but did he actually sign???? He gave the impression that he turned up to complete the paper work, then told them straight up that he didn't want to go on

The veterans list - i think each club can only have a maximum or 2 players on it. It may be 3. If the club has for example 4 people qualify for it, they will obviously take the higher paid players and put them on the veterans list. This is because i think only half the players salary is put onto the clubs salary cap. The player has to play at that one club i believe, hence why the king didn qualify for the crows. Rookie list players do have their fee attributed to the salary cap and the NSW scholarship holders are exactly that, a scholarship that is only around 10 k per yer (not only, thats a fair amount at 16 years of age). The NSW scholarship holders do not have there fees count towards to a clubs salary cap as it was an inititive from the AFL to broaden the game within NSW and try and keep young and talented players in AFL and allow them to have a greater exposure to AFL football.
Hope that helps! thats all that i am aware of on these situations.
PS: im hoping crawford is on the footy show every week now, but wat a player -you will be sorely missed by all.
