1. Premierships are won by strong clubs - that means a team and coach that has the support of the club. While I think that Laird is the best caoch we have ever had I think our success comes as a result of the winning culture we have developed.

2. Laird is a great coach because he unstands and complements this culture. I can think of coaches whose egos have got in the way of this and they have turned a winning culture into a disfunctioning failing one. I sure we can all think of examples. I'd rather not mention names.

3. These comments that Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse could have won with the doggies team shows little appreciate of the mamoth acheivement that Laird has accomplished. How many dead cert teams have lost GFs (even Geelong this year)? Over Laird's term there have been times when teh team has been down, undermanned, losing confidence. evry time Laird has got them up and even 06 we made 2nd - a level which probably belied our form and talent for that year. Little is known about Lairds preparation of the team through the finals and in the week leading up to teh finals because he never big-notes himself, but he used some fairly innovative and effective ways to ensure that all players came ready to play.

He lets the results speak for themselves and 5 wins and a second in 6 years is superb! By the time he retires he will be without peer I believe.
you make some good points, but Laird would not (arguably) have that record if he arrived at the Dogs 10 years earlier.
I think the pertinent point is that Centrals are a strong club.
Maybe he is a good coach, but I maintain that a lot of the hard work was already done, or/and he could be the right bloke in the right place at the right time.

I think Punk Rooster has spoken the most sense in this thread. Roy Laird is happy to be a "big fish in a small pond" and there's no evidence to suggest he would be even remotely successful at AFL level. To presume he would do this or that if he coached Adelaide or whoever is just supposition. The best that can be said is that he has potential and undeniably a very good basis from which he can grow. But that's as far as any of us can go and if chooses to not step up a level, then "big fish in a small pond" is where it ends.

The other point I think people need to recognise is that the calibre of coaches he would be up against and the calibre of players he would need to shut down is much higher. Look at the SANFL and think about the coaches that have been around the last few years and how many of them you would consider genuine gun coaches? I don't think there would be too many, whereas if Roy stepped up, he'd be taking on the likes of Bomber Thompson, Alastair Clarkson, Mick Malthouse, Paul Roos and so on, those coaches have the potential to out-think and out-coach him in five minutes.

That's not meant to be disrespectful to the average SANFL coach, but the fact is AFL coaches have generally done their lieutenant work in the lower leagues, become assistants and learnt the nature of big league football at big league clubs with big league politics and big league egoes, local coaches have not experienced that. One must also think of the tactical ability a coach needs to shut down the likes of Jade Sheedy as opposed to Chris Judd. The players are worlds apart in skill, effectiveness and anaerobic capability.

What might work on a SANFL level is not guaranteed to work at AFL level.

That said, I do think Roy Laird needs to be given the kudos he deserves as one of the all-time great coaches in the SANFL, just as his premiership record demands.

Yes, its true, he didn't take team X from spooners to premiers, he took a well developed team and made it a behemoth, but that's still something.

To deny Roy Laird his due respect is just being silly...

Roy and Jack and Jack and Fos, all great coaches with great records...

As a Sturt man, I'd be happy as a pig in you know what if Roy decided to toss the free Holden aside and come down to Unley and drive a Volvo...

Great post csbowes...

I know for a fact that Roy has openly said he does not like the AFL and has no interest in getting involved.

He should be appointed coach of Centrals for the next 10 years !!

Bowsey i reckon Lairdy would go quite well in the AFL with all the asst coaches around him and all the resources and money in the any one could coach.

Look at Clarkson where did he gain his coaching experience at Central and then on with the Power, and now he is a AFL and SANFL Premiership coach quite easy by the looks of it heh !!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So easy that he is the only AFL and SANFL premiership coach.

The best 17 coaches in Australia are senior coaches of an AFL club, just like the best 600 or so footballers are on an AFL list.

Laird is clearly a far better coach than Craig. Crows have zero spirit and fight. Would be chasing Laird like hell if I was AFC. They lack guts.

I wouldn't say that the best footballers are on AFL lists. There are few players in the SANFL who are better than quite a few on all of the AFL club lists IMO.

bullshite mate.if the best 17 coaches are in the AFL how do you explain terry wallace? he couldnt coach a f---- in a brothel. being a top coach is not just about berating players as a lot of the AFL coaches do its also about managing how players react to what coaches say.centrals were gone for all money half way through the year yet laird still got them up in the end. If he had the resources AFL coaches had including craig he would easily be able to coach at the top level.

Centrals are a big fish in a small pond. So is Laird.
Neither have been tested in a big pond.

Centrals are a big fish in a pond that has plenty of room for the other 8 clubs to grow to the same size as them. The Dogs are just better than the other 8 "fish" at getting to the surface of the pond and getting the feed, growing stronger.

How is it their fault that the other "fish" are just treading water at the bottom of the pond ? Neither the club or Roy Laird has been tested you say, but what do you suggest as a means of testing them in the bigger pond ? A trial game against an AFL club maybe or just give them a 3rd SA based AFL club license and throw them to the wolves of the national comp and see how they go ?
