Wishlist for the SANFL Draw 2009

Postby Sojourner » Sun Oct 26, 2008 12:43 pm

Thought it might be worthwhile to put together a "wishlist" for the SANFL Programme for this season, naturally its all way to late for 2009, yet the SANFL admin also read this board so maybe some might get through at a later stage!

1, More Country Games, it would be good to see each SANFL club take a turn over two seasons to host a country game in their zone ensuring an average of four country games each season.

2, More games at Thebarton, its a venue brimming with SANFL history and central to most, a great venue to profile SANFL to the public!

3, Bring Back "Double Headers"

4, Lets have a Heritage Round circa 1930's so that South can wear the old S & A Guernsey again and the Bays their unique jumper!

5, More Friday Night Footy at the Parade at the start of the season even if its used as a "Neutral Venue". Friday night matches at the Parade make for an awesome SANFL atmosphere!

Please Add to my list! :)

Anyone heading over to Perth for the State League match next year?

Venue hasn't been finalised, hopefully its Fremantle Oval again.

1. Sounds good.
2. Only if its facilities have improved from when I went there a couple years ago.
3. I don't like them, being the early game sucks.
4. I don't care much about heritage rounds.
5. Yep, Norwood on Friday nights should be used as much as possible. Why not even play Saturday night games there?

Mine:
-No Sunday games.
-Make the finals double headers start later - 1st game starts at 2pm. 2nd game is under lights.
-Go back to starting games at 2:20.

From a westies supporter

We play all sides except souths once, and we play souths 13 times at richmond

Not putting souths down, its our only ROUGH CHANCE to get of the bottom

perhaps you can play south for us & we'll play someone else as we'd have more chance playing someone else than south as they know how to beat us

With the U18s next year, it is very possible that the league game will be at 2.20 pm.

:!: Not a bad idea at all!

And I agree about the other comment re 2:20 start time; would make it just that little bit easier to get to the game on a Sat'dy arvo.

Re Herritage Game

- With the South 1877 Jumper in 2007 we co-incided it with SA History Week run by the SA History Trust. This gave the match against Glenelg some extra promotion in a new area (at no extra cost).

- History Wweek usually runs 10 days over 2 weekends, last year it was May 16-25.

- How about the SANFL get involved and have the history of SA football a major focus of the week? During those 2 weekends 8 clubs could host a home game showcasing their herritage and history. (Alas 1 club misses out).

- One of the strengths of the SANFL is that it goes back over 130 years, it is the oldest organised team sporting competition in Australia, the Magarey Medal is the oldest "best & fairest' award in Australian sport.

- Combined the nine clubs have almost 1000 years of history to celebrate, this would be a great forum to do it in, by doing it in partnership with the SA History Trust some extra publicity could be generated.

seriously what about a pre season night competition like we used to have, i also recall that when cigarette sposorship was stopped foundationsa/living health was supposed to replace the money lost on sponsorship & we had the foundation cup etc then all of a sudden we didn't have a competition with the last grand final being played mid year by the top two teams of the regular home & away season which was central v eagles & it was something like 4 goals to 3 but it was a great game to watch but i think we should get back to a series like that rather than just trial games & the league gets extra revenue through the gate, could you imagine a double header at norwood on a friday night & another double header at thebarton on the saturday night with a shorten quarter games like they used to have

Supporters would luv it Bayman but these days I wonder about the clubs and players, alot already say the season is too taxing on them, having a preseason comp just adds to that, great idea in theory and they were great back in the dim dark ages when we all smoked, but don t hold ya breath for it to return

I think some kind of modified "pre season" competition would be great...

Most clubs play at least 1 internal trial and then about 3 trial games so I reckon the SANFL could work out some 4 or 5 week pre season comp.

My only request to the SANFL in regards to a wishlist for the 2009 draw is that Centrals have a bye in the round of the last weekend of August. Either that or they schedule a country game up in Clare (which they have done before, I think the Dogs played Sturt ?) because that is the weekend I am getting married up in the Clare Valley.

I might have to email the SANFL and ask them to give the Doggies a bye that weekend...

My wish is for 2 night games at the start of the year and 2 towards the end! The opposition seem to "get up" for these games more than us because the novelty wore off long ago.
I guess the dollar rules in the end, who wants the premiership points anyway as long as you get 7,000 in attendance?

I understand this is on may 23. Sa under 18's to play on the same day in perth. It will be interesting where the afl schedule that match. No idea if an AFL game is in perth that day.
