Coaching Merry-Go_Round for 2007 Season

Postby Squawk » Sun Jul 09, 2006 2:43 am

How many current AFL coaches will not be coaching their current AFL clubs next year?

Who do you think will go and why?

Names to think about (in alphabetical order):

Connolly (Freo)
Sheedy (Ess)
Williams (Port)
Pagan (Carl)
Thomas (St Kilda)

Clarkson (Haw) and Craig (Adel) have just re-signed and Matthews (Bris) has a few more years on his contract yet I think although the same might go for Pagan as well.
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

Yes - a bit late so I slipped up with the alphabetical order. Was just trying to be fair to all concerned!

Personally, I think Thomas should go, Connolly is shaky after 5 years and Williams and Sheedy will get another season at least. Pagan will live on until the Gold Coast team arrives and he takes some big money to go north and retire in the sun with Malcolm Blight and Leigh Matthews.

[quote="Squawk"]Personally, I think Thomas should go

Know where you're coming from Squawk but as long as I Can't Believe It's Not Butterss remains as President of St Kilda, there'd be more chance of Liberia winning a nuclear war against the United States than of Thomas being relieved of his duties.

Re Thomas: it was interesting to read in the Advertiser yesterday Ali Carle's interview with Peter Jonas. When she suggested that Blight would have coached the Saints to a premiership by now if he was still coaching them, Jonas' reaction was to laugh and say "i think its best to stay out of that one", as though Thomas' coaching is a bit of an inside joke with coaching staff at other clubs.

Wrong.
Even sherpers in the Himilayas are fully aware of his inability to coach.

Yeah i know that, i just mean that it appears the coaching fraternity are probably having a bit of a giggle amongst themselves about it, in addition to everyone else.

Even forgetting for a moment about that it is Thomas coaching them, I gather they would laugh about the seemingly underhanded way in which it happened.

i think who should go and who will go are two different issues

who should, Sheedy, Connolly, Laidly, Pagan, Thomas, Bomber Thompson

who actually will, I think Freo will axe Connolly of they miss the finals, the other clubs will lack balls to make the tough call

I sympathise with Sheedy. Let's not forget he delivered an unexpected flag in 1993 with the baby bombers. I don't think you could get a better coach in Australia as Neil Craig said. I suggest that the Bombers do something a bit different - keep Sheeds as a "Master" coach and appoint a coach plus one less Assistant coach. Think they could do with a culture change there but if they like their culture, Mark Harvey will be their next coach.

Thomas should go - can someone get him a job making cheese on King Island? Could Dermie be lured in to the coaching game by this job and a strong list that has underperformed?

I think Connolly will go if they don't make the top four. Mark Harvey to coach them if he doesn't go back to the Bombers. Otherwise, Peter Sumich?

Laidley will get another year before the Roos seek out Wayne Carey to coach them.

Bomber Thomson will be lucky to survive. Would Gary Ayres go back there to coach again?

Carlton's next coach? - who cares as long as he (or she) is cheap so the AFL can stop giving them handouts after they have been fined. Give the job to bloody Rebecca Wilson - that will shut her up for a while and get her out of the Sat Advertiser!

Even a finals appearance will not save Chris Comedy from a DCM come season's end from the Dockers board.A fresh approach and winning mentallity need to be instilled or they will never win a flag.
Bit harsh on Williams and Pagan in this list boys, neither have done much wrong,Pagan has nothing to work with and Williams is only 18 months on from building a team that won the flag,he has to get 3 more years to have a crack at doing it again.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

1993 is a long long way away, footy has changed so much and not so sure sheedy is the master anymore

His recruiting strategy, sorry lack of recruiting strategy, someone needs to be held accountable for this

His game plan, sorry again, lack of game plan, built around a full forward who is now injured and now the team has struggled to re-invent themselves.

Finally, his senior players have let him down badly this year, which may suggest after 20 years the message is a bit stale and their is a need for some fresh ideas.......

Personally I would make a change and look outside the obvious, Harvey and O'donnell

Connolly will go, Pagan is only a chance if he's out of contract (personally I don't think too much more could have been done with the Blues in recent seasons), Thomas won't go unless he gives it away himself and all others would be safe I'd suggest.

Gotta disagree a little there Squawk, Sheedy has been a great coach and football person in general, and absolute ornament to the game, but IMHO he has to take the majority of responsibility for where the Bombers find themselves at right now...
