If Cupido had an IQ higher than the number on his guernsey he would certainly still be playing AFL footy talent is not his issue. I have heard Kevin Sheedy say that the two most uncoachable people he has had are Damian Cupido and Ben Haynes and both have ended up at Westies after their AFL stints  .

Actually technically it isnt. 8)

If the game was called mark and struggle to kick over 50 metres then he would have been a champion.

Did they feel embarassed by the McLeod/Groom swap and want to give Freo something back?

Plus the crows refusing to give Welsh and Hudson a 2 year contract but gladly gave Kenneth one. Very well thought out.

Still nicely done by his manager on what would have been a reasonable golden handshake for the bloke.

Kenny was more advanced at the same age as Pavlich and was playing league at the time I think

besides all the other clubs passed on Pavlich too

lucky pick just as Hird was for Essendon

but a great pick at that!

Pavlich too had broken into the senior side and played some handy games until the U18's carnival he arrived back after that and wasn't as good Kenny was definately playing better foot at that stage. I thought at the time the Crows made the correct decision but in hindsight maybe not. You don't know how they're going to turn out though.

Why will Kenny be a "huge asset in 2009" when he wasnt in 2008 ?
Played virtually all year with you and was good to servicable at best.

Well done to a great bloke.
People can criticise all they want but how many players would give their left nut to play 150 AFL games???

Also came into contact with James Fantasia a couple of years back, Crows Recruiting Manager at the time Kenny got drafted, and asked him about McGregor v Pavlich. His response was if he had that pick again he would still have taken McGregor, he was the better of the 2 at the time. He also did mention that every other club didn't pick Pavlich either!

So why does it always come back as the Crows could have had Pavlich instead of McGregor??

Also wasn't he pick 75?? Not bad to get 150 games from a bloke picked that late in the draft!!!

Think it through 'g'
Will be at Eagles for all trainings rather than Crows
Will be available for all Eagles games unlike this year when he played 7 for the crows and was in the 25 on other occassions which must have affected his preparation.
His mentoring of juniors will be even more significant now that he is around the club more often.
Wouldn't be surprised if he was an integral part of the leadership group in 2009.
Has a clear direction for his career now rather than the uncertainty of 2007/8. Surely this will see an even more focussed Kenny in 2009.
I think he will hold down CHB with ease and also be a useful pinch-hitter up forward when needed. A great asset he certainly will be.

Spot on Wedgetail it took me awhile to work out exactly the same as you have written.
He can fully train with the Eagles .
Ron can build the backline around him .

OK. The Ken McGregor/Matthew Pavlich references made me go back and look at the drafts.

McGregor was picked at 75 in the 1998 Draft.
Pavlich was picked at 4 in the 1999 Draft.

So how exactly did the Crows miss out on Pavlich ?
Was Pavlich able to nominate for the 1998 draft and NO club picked him up, or was the 1999 Draft
the first one he was eligible for and hence got snapped up by Freo with the fourth pick (in reality the
second once both Freo & Richmond had the priority picks done)

Both Pavlich and McGregor were in the 1998 Draft, I believe both were 17 y.o. The Crows picked McGregor over Pavlich so he missed out on being drafted. Pavlich then played most of the next year in the League with Eagles, obviously impressing many, he was then drafted the following year.

Pretty much!!

Some clubs in the last few years have used late round picks on raw 17yo's in the hope that they improve enough the next year that they would have been a 1st Round pick the following year (eg. 5th Round 2007 (17yo) instead of 1st Round 2008 (18yo). Similar to Pav except he didnt get picked up as 17yo.

They were actually refused 3 year deals that they asked for, Adelaide wanted to give them 2 year deals if I remember correctly.

I believe in the 1998 draft all AFL teams were entitled to take one 17 y.o. The crows took Kenny over Pav. Pavlich in 1999 made his State debut and kicked three goals and had a good season with the Eagles. From then onwards it was a no brainer that he would go very early in the '99 draft.

On the morning of the '98 draft I was listening to 5aa and Russell Ebert said Pavlich would go in the top twelve, he also mentioned that he would stay in SA to complete studies. How wrong did 16 clubs get it.

Pavlich always had an AFL body, it was a matter of fine tuning.

Maybe Kenny can resume his cricket career..... Was very good as a kid at Port Adelaide CC.

He's a great bloke, who just struggled with a lack of pace. He will be very handy for the Eagles for the next 3 or 4 years...

That is the magical phrase ferret. The two Adelaide clubs didn't want to draft him until he had completed his studies.Lets not forget or let Port Adelaide Power fans forget that his "Cousin" was or is Bucky Cunningham .More importantly how can you late your football talented cousin slip through your FINGERS!!!
And as a side note Greg Anderson used to come to Oval Ave and watch matthew play each week.He would sit not far from me on the outer back then.

And at the time he was drafted Kenny was the teal cup Full Forward for South Australia .And don't forget the club needed tall forwards ,some things never change .
