As a ruckman I didn't even find myself near my direct opponent until we first made contact the first bounce. I suppose running up and jumping into each other with our knees raised was a form of handshake!

In my playing days of footy I always would shake hands with my opponent. To see a player like Chambo (who kids look up too) not shake the hand of Rudolph is very sad. Sportsmenship, Fairness and too be gracious in winning or losing is what is missing alot in footy today.

Good on Rudolph for doing it. He is the one who can hold his head high at the end of the day.

To see the carry on by Chambo from yesterday's game, is he becoming the Matthew Richardson of the SANFL???? :?

I used to as well Southee, but some players didn't shake my hand in response, so I just tapped them on the shoulder and said good luck. Some players have different approaches to the start of games, some are nervous, others are in the zone. Personally I didn't care if they didn't shake my hand. I knew it was something I did at the start of every game but I know teammates who hated me doing it (sign of weakness), and hated their opponent doing it to them. Weird hey?

I can't believe there has been a thread on it personally but there you go. Just shows everyone has an opinion, but I certainly don't think any less of Chambers, nor more of Rudolph. It's like tucking your guernsey in, or wearing your socks down. Who cares.

Gadj, I can always remember a coach who would not let us play with our jumpers out and socks down. His words to us were "If you are going to play like a footballer, you have to look like a footballer!!".
As for the shaking of the hands, I always would, no matter what, and like you I have my fair share who would not shake back or say "Get *insert rude word here!!*" .....but if that was the case it would give me great satisfaction in beating them. I think if they are upset/pi**ed off by an opponent trying to shake their hand it would throw them off their game but if they just shaked hands and got on with the game then Im sure it would not matter....

I don't understand that - you are wearing the guernsey, shorts and socks, got footy boots on, doesn't that look like a footballer? Why does having your socks up and jumper in have got to do anything with it? Not asking you personally southee, just anyone who says that.

Thanks for the PM Stampy, it was about as enlightening as this topic has been, apart from confirming my opinion of you, you wasted my time, but thanks all the same. Just one question though, and I do expect an answer. By any chance did you go up to a Sturt supporter and shake his hand and wish him good luck before the game and then were you a good enough sport to shake a Sturt supporters' hand and say "bad luck, better luck next year" or did you just give them the same negative, self absorbed diatribe that you present here.
P.S. The quote below seems pretty apt for you.
'PAFC don't want any advantages in the SANFL. It would only take away from any achievements we earned.'

When I coach a side, this is a team rule. To run on the field looking the same adds a little bit of value to the team I think. This is kids footy mind you, I doubt I would bother with the rule if I were coaching men.

Once they hit the field and commence the warm up, they can untuck the guernsey and push the socks down if they wish to.

You know what? Who gives a ****! The Grand Final is upon us, let's hope it's a great match! Someone will win, someone will lose. Stampy, you love The Bays & you want the best for your your team, everyone else, we love our teams & we want the best outcome for our sides. Let's get over ourselves & hope that we all shake hands after the game & accept that The Game is bigger than The Individual.
