What did we make of the crowd today?

Postby NFC » Sun Sep 28, 2008 7:58 pm

Almost 14k. Not bad, although I expected a tad more, but that was probably being unrealistic.

How does it compare to previous PF's? Wasn't last year about 8k; or am I completely off base?

7,794 there last year.
I was expecting more today after they pulled over 12k in the minor round.
Would have been 20k if they'd held it Friday night.

ABC said it was the best crowd for a Prelim in 6 years.

I expected a crowd of about that size - think it was pretty good given lots of families would have had AFL GF activities yesterday and spent today catching up on other things.

It was bigger than the VFL Grand Final, despite that competition being unquestionably better.

There is a simple answer to why the crowds have been up this year in my opinion:
1. Norwood, Port, Glenelg, Sturt and Centrals. They have the biggest supporter bases (and clearly bandwagon jumpers). As a Norwood member I went today to enjoy a good game of football between 2 of the big clubs. Had it been South vs West, i wouldn't have bothered.
2. People are also getting sick of the $$ it costs to take a family to an AFL game and of watching an over umpired game of football!

Agree on all fronts. Even though it was a blowout today, I enjoyed being there. Glenelg were a pleasure to watch.

For sure! Glenelg killed Sturt in every avenue and played an awesome game. I hope they win next week!

my estimate was 12-15000, not much off with 13000odd going, realistically was a good crowd, and no where near as feral as last week

I'd definitely go to see South vs West in a final, even if the Eagles aren't involved in the other matches. I don't see the difference in two of the best three sides for that season being South and West as opposed to Glenelg and Sturt. That way of thinking also hurts the crowd figure, just because the "big four" supporters won't go because there will be a smaller crowd. Kerry Packer once said "I haven't come here to look at the crowd, I've come to look at the cricket". That's my philosophy on the matter (with football replaced instead of cricket).

Good noise though, could really sense it all around the ground. Well done to those who turned up and yelled for their teams.

Interesting to note that Preliminary Final in 2002 was between Sturt and Norwood.

Yesterdays PF was the first involvng one of the Big four since Port in 2005?

Goes to show again get any combination of Port, Norwood, Sturt and Glenelg in a final and the crowd will be good
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

History suggests if North play any of those sides in a final the crowd is also very good. Of the 8,000 at last year's prelim final it appeared that at least 6000 of them were North supporters. All of the media reported it that way.
