Why do you barrack for your club?

Postby smac » Sat Sep 27, 2008 6:31 pm

In the same vein as Spelly's recent threads, is there a reason or story behind you supporting your club?

For me:

Dad and my Grandgather grew up Norwood supporters, however lived in Salisbury North at the time Centrals were formed. Dad was a 12 year old in 1960 when the dogs recruited him to the U17's, and the whole family at the time converted. By the time I turned up in 1974 the whole family were mad keen on the dogs, culminating in my playing underage and reserves footy for them. Me, Dad and my brother have all been involved over the years, the dogs are in our blood now!

Good thread this one.

For me: My Pa trained with the Bays, after coming over from Tassie, but did his shoulder before playing a game.
As he was a butcher he thought it best he give footy away, as you can't be a butcher with a bung shoulder.
Despite having the shop in the Norwood zone, he was a Glenelg man, and it passed on to my Mum then onto me.

Dad didn't follow footy.

As I've said before, my father played in the red and blue for Moonta, and followed the same colours in Adelaide.
My sister was much older than me and went to matches with him, and as I got older, and my father stopped going because of ill health, my sister started taking me with her.
[Later, her future husband-to-be had to quit his long-term membership of Port Adelaide and join the Redlegs for a year or two before she would marry him.]

Uniform.
Last half of 1976 GF was broadcast live into Melbourne and we had just bought our first colour TV and an impressionable 13 went apeshyte over Sturt's strip.

Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather & Great Great Grandfather all barracked for the Double Blues (now my little 1 year old is a huge Sturt fan!). Great Grand father grew up on Trimmer Tce opposite Unley oval at the turn of the last century. Mum grew up on Fredrick Street Unley. I grew up on Cross Rd Malvern. Trust me it was tough through my school years being the kid that barracked for the perrenial wooden spooners. I went to most games at Adelaide oval with my grandfather and can virtually remember the wins we had between 89 and 95 such was their infrequency!

When I told him his Granddad was 52 at the first premiership and his Great Grandfather was 72 at our first GF he really got the idea. Life is a minestrone.

I grew up deep in Port Adelaide's country zone and had a mad keen Grandfather Port Supporter. I even had a maggies footy as a little tacker, he had a Russel Ebert 4 Magarey Medal mirror thingy hanging up in the dining room. Apparently one day he actually fell off the wall after Port lost   .

Anyway the double blues came about after my footy club as a kid played in double blue then later just navy blue, went to the 2002 GF and was sold never to cross over to the dark side again.

Confession time.

The middle junior smac (girl, aged 4) is besotted with West for some reason. I'm happy for her to go with her own beliefs, but ****** if I know where those beliefs came from - I don't personally know a single West supporter. :? \

The eldest and youngest smac jrs are both dogs supporters.
