As the late great George Harrison used to sing " All those years ago."
About 25 odd years ago there was another Cooney
He was the the Great white hope
Yes a white heavyweight boxer who was built up massively in the media to be the white fella to stop the negro supremacy in the Heavyweight boxing divisions.
Cooney didnt live up to the hype and the negro boxers reigned supreme.
Some gave him a new name the Great white dope.

Ironically the world had to wait until the 2008 Brownlow Medal
Thats when Cooney defeated Black....

I am pretty sure Goodes got 2 votes in that game where he kicked 8 against Freo?

Goodes didn't play in the middle that night ... I don't think I'd be complaining about the number of votes he got over the course of the season (should have missed more games than he did too).

no where near the worst winner ever, and with a speech like that makes him one of the better ones.
As for worst winners 1982 and brian wilson from the dee's, he even says so himself and it is all he is remembered for.

Boomer Harvey was also robbed - can't believe he didn't poll a vote in the Kanga's round 5 win over Collingwood. IIRC he picked up something like 35 disposals and brought them back into the match. Medhurst got 3 votes, Fraser got 2 and Lindsay Thomas 1. How do two Collingwood players poll the two highest votes in a game that they lost??

Sorry lads. Just don't like the bloke.
Was a much more worthy winner than Woewoedin though.
Think I'm just a bit pissed off that Black or Richo didn't win.

Well done Adam Cooney, he seems like such a likeable young bloke. Loved the Burger Rings story LOL. Cooney's season did fall away a bit towards the end and his below par finals series can be apparently explained by a crack in the Patella OUCH. Well done to the young man. Not only was Cooney getting the hard ball for the Dogs he was also lethal around the goals and is a deserving winner.

As for the telecast itself, it was an unwatchable wank. Was that Kate Cebrano who opened proceedings? Ugh. That was embarrassing. She still has a good voice but please she is past her used by date surely. Then Dimwitreou starts counting out the wrong round. Just shows that overpaid executives often have problems with the most rudimentary tasks. They fired off the call of the count so they could fit in a zillion ads. Gee that was great NOT. The only highlight of the evening was the long overdue recognition of volunteers who keep grassroots footy alive. The 'round of applause' for the ******* stage set that probably cost thousands to create was a monstrosity. They would have been better off in simpler surrounds and giving those funds to the very volunteers they belatedly recognised on the night. The Harvey tribute from Voss made me squirm. Again, it was embarrassing. By this stage it was after ten o'clock and I had had enough. What a wankfest, never again.

Well done to Cooney and well done to Booney as I had both him and Black for a place ( not for the win though).

The type of player you like to see win Brownlow's,fair but tough, skilled and tireless much like many of the recent winners which makes me wonder, when will a Brownlow winner 'break the mould' of current day winners?

Cooney,Bartel,Ruccuito,Buckley are all similar in game play,Goodes perhaps being the exception of late but he is much like the other mentioned just a little taller,so when will a ruckman ala Wynd win one, when will a Key forward ala Lockett win one and are the umpires now hell bent on acknowledging these sorts of players to the detriment of others? Or,is it that our game now consists of basically 18 or 19 'mid fielders' on the park and the 3 or 4 who do not rotate through the midfield/hf/hb have no chance to impress the umpires enough? Franklin?

Well done to Cooney.

Just a few points.

I had a Ablett vs. Black 'discussion' (read arguement) with a Lions poster on another site. I went to footywire to back up my comments and I soon found out that there was nothing between the two in terms of output and this about halfway through the season. Black had 20 votes up to this time and Ablett had about six.

The two following posts are from bigfooty where Cats fans are having a bit of whinge.

In the Geelong vs. Sydney match consider the following stats.... ['tima' on BF]

Geelong 16.18.114
Sydney 10.12.72

Stats:
Ablett - 35 disposals, 3.0 goals, 5 tackles
Bartel - 27 disposals, 2.1 goals, 10 tackles
Kirk - 23 disposals, 0.0 goals, 7 tackles
Stevie J - 22 disposals, 4.1 goals, 3 tackles
Stokes - 21 disposals, 4.0 goals, 3 tackles
Selwood - 20 disposals, 0.3 goals, 0 tackles
Ling - 18 disposals, 0.1 goals, 4 tackles
Kelly - 15 disposals, 0.0 goals, 6 tackles
Goodes - 14 disposals, 0.4 goals, 5 tackles (tagged by Ling)

15 Cats and 11 Swans equalled or had more disposals than Goodes.

Votes:
3 - Ablett
2 - Goodes
1 - Selwood

And this is how the umpiries saw some of Jimmy Bartel's best efforts of the season ['kendall cedric' on BF]

Jimmey Bartel:

Round 2 - 38 touches, 9 marks, 2 goals = 0 votes
Round 3 - 30 touches, 10 marks = 0 votes
Round 4 - 31 touches, 9 marks = you guessed it, 0 votes
Round 5 - 27 touches, 10 tackles, 2 goals = 3 votes. Sorry, 0 votes
Round 10 - 28 touches, 6 tackles, 1 goal = what? 0 votes!
Round 13 - 28 touches, 6 marks, 1 goal = nope
Round 15 - 32 touches, 8 marks, 2 goalskis = hahahaha, whuh?
Round 16 - 31 touches, 2 goals = noooooooo! 0 votes
Round 18 - 32 bites....7 marks....8 tackles.............2 goals....one behind = F###! 0 votes!
Round 20 - 29 touches, 9 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal = Rio de Janiro
Round 21 - 37 lazy touches, 11 marks, 3 tackles, 8 screams of anger = Robert Deniro

How did Goodes on one leg get so many votes? How did Black get so many votes? How did Jimmy Bartel and Boomer Harvey get so few votes?? :?

I liked the volunteers bit too but was cynical of the bloke getting singled out. They said he had put in "100s of hours". My cynical self says they wanted to promote game development there moreso, there would be plenty of volunteers with more feathers in their caps for longer periods of time. Full credit to the guy for his work but did it measure up close to what the lady from Cobden had done for her club? No.

With Bartel being the reigning Brownlow Meadalist perhaps the umpires expected more of him? Im not sure how though,if 30+ touches and multiple goals does not get votes, what does?

Whinge away Cat fans,Im on your side......

As much as Bartel is a gun and I love the way he plays footy, I don't think he was ever going to get the attention from the umpires that Gablett did this year.
I was genuinely surprised when Bartel won it last year as I hadn't noticed him that much in the Geelong games I saw, and the same again this year.
But no doubting the bloke is a gun and probably should've polled more votes.
I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be the Geelong trifecta.
Thought the last few rounds last night were teriffic to watch.
If Richo had polled 3 in the last round it would've made my night though.

not sure what to tackle first...

any Brownlow Medal winner is worthy.
I'd consider Cooney in the top 5-10% of the AFL system.

we don't agree with how umpires interpret play during the game, the chances are we'll disagree with their review of proceedings also.
The Brownlow Medal has churned out many worthy winners, & has a rich history, depite the flawed process of how votes are awarded.
I think the "random" nature of the award is where it's value is at- how many people get excited over the Merv Agars award? none- we know the result after each game (ie boring & predictable)

The Brownlow process is imperfect, yet as good as we've got going.
The MVP or the Coaches award could be the mpst prestigious, if the AFL marketed it as such.

Not unhappy with Cooney winning, just reckon Bartel should have gotten more votes. His possessions are actually worth more than Ablett's in a way. Ablett gets the ball fed to him by the best midfield in the business. In the granny look how often Gazza is the last link in a lot of hard work to clear the ball out the back of the centre square duel. It normally comes from Bartel, Ling or Selwood out to Corey or Kelly to Gazza. Bartel is the one who gets in there more often than not and wins that hard ball. He lays more tackles than most Cats and is an excellent overhead mark for his size. I actually think he is the best player in the team which is a big call.
