I use the term "grunt" in a collective mode. I'm talking about the philosophy of a team, rather than the attitude of an individual. I didn't see the game at the Bay, but the first two times Glenelg belted us, they snarled at us, pushed us around, showed us who was boss. They intimidated us not only with physicality, but also with long direct football.
Sturt also did this in round 1 this year and in the semi final. One of the things Rick Macgowan has brought to Sturt is the Central way of putting in the niggle, roughing players up when they're on the ground, holding onto the ball to slow opposition run, inching over the mark, etc, etc. Norwood don't do any of this, we are too nice, and a reflection of Trevor Hill's personality.
Think back to the 1997 premiership team. What a team that was ... not one player in that team took a backward step, a genuinely hard as nails team. What I wouldn't give for a Paul McCormack type across the half back line. On top of that we were direct, with a purpose in everything we did.
Unless we are prepared to change our current philosophy on style of play, we are headed for more years of being a team who looks the goods one week, and fails miserably the next.
