In reference to the 96' Prelim final ... At the time I left the game gutted by the umpiring and result, then to hear of the 24-8 free kick count I was fuming.

Took me 9 years before I could watch the replay (and oddly I didn't think the umpiring looked quite so bad when I did), but here is why Norwood lost:

1. Out played Port to take a decent last quarter lead, we had them on toast .. But then we stopped and shut up shop way too far from the finish line, dumb/nervous/panicky football!

2. Hodges' biggest contribution that day (after being very well held by Stevie Daniels) was wiping Anthony Harvey out in that last quarter with a bone crunching hip and shoulder (I would have called it "beautiful" if it were one of my players who landed it) ... Obviously his kick for goal was pretty useful lol (and it was sadly, a clear free kick).

And thats about it ... When you have your chance to win a game, regardless of umpiring, and you don't take it - Then THAT is why you lost the game.

Your repeated posting of that one decision is perpetuating a myth that the Legs weren't shagged by the men in white that day.

Im sorry but your repetitive - somewhat deliberate - fudging of the statistics to make it sound worse than it was does more to perpetuate any myth about that day than me posting pics.

You had more free kicks at 3/4 time than what you beleive you had in the whole game.

The free kick count, according to the ABC telecast, was 15-9 at 3/4 time in favour of Port. Port recieved 7 free kicks to 3 in the last quarter. 3 of Ports 7 free kicks were out on the fulls. None of Norwoods were, so a relative free kick count of 4-3 in the last quarter....terrible stuff. The final free kick count was 22-12.

Port recieved 3 free kicks in their forward 50 in the second half:

1 for Daniels running too far (or holding the ball as he was tackled as well), 1 for a deliberate throw by D'Antochia, and the Hodges free (the only one in the last quarter).

For Port to have had more frees in their forward 50 than Norwood did the whole day, 10 of their 11 first half free kicks would have had to have been in the forward line which is completely fanciful.

Any other bull shit you want corrected while we're at it here, or is that enough?

See that was a huge mistake by the ump ... It was clearly an accidental throw

Thats the gist of it really. Norwood shut up shop 12 minutes into the last quarter with a 15 point lead and tried to play the boundary for the last 16 minutes, which involved the last 5 minutes simply walking the ball over the boundary line. Thats what lost it for the Legs, not some fanciful fabricated free kick stat.

EDIT: That and the fact the big giant soft cock Jason Millar only playing 5 minutes and didnt want to play any more because he had the flu, leaving you a man down all day. Softest effort in a final ever.

I put these picks on BF to dispel the myth that Scottys free kick shouldnt have been one, so Ill put them here as well. Its the most obvious free kick youll ever find.

So what? Mark Mackie was a Norwood supporter, didn't help Norwood. Peter Mead was a Port Adelaide player .. didn't help Port Adelaide. It means nothing who they used to barrack for. If anything it goes against the club because the umpire would be making mental notes not to show favouritism and then unwittingly go the other way. If you saw Peter Mead umpire the Norwood v Port Adelaide game at Alberton 1972, you will know what I'm talking about. It was early in Peter's umpiring career, and just about every 50/50 decision went Norwood's way that day.

My reference to the 1996 PF is not based on one free kick. Unlike some, I judge an umpire on his overall perfromance, and that day Norwood definitely got the rough of the green. I rarely criticise umpiring performances, but I did that day.

I was at Norwood oval last year, when they played Port Adelaide on a Friday night and i heard a certain AFL umpire who was in the crowd comment how much he hated Port Adelaide, and Warren Tredrea.

I guess it's not surprising. Everyone has their favourites and non-favourites, even umpires. It's human to have those thoughts, but then once you have the whistle in your mouth you have to be as impartial as possible. The great umpires manage to do this, the others find it a little more difficult.

I'd find it hard to do, and that's why I don't like to criticise umpires too often. All I can say is Brendan Fevola should be very pleased I don't umpire AFL :)

Maybe you'd like to correct the notion that taking detailed notes during videos of games from last century isn't just the teensiest bit desperate?

What NFC was getting at is try to go back on topic.
No need to bring up something had happened in ancient times.

I would bring up more important games like the 1999 1st Semi and the 1982 GF but that would be off topic. 8)

Think you'll find Macca and Chiggy never crossed paths too much on the footy field. Macca was normally at the bottom of packs.

Supporter base? LOL. A few people here bring it up and Statto goes to the archives. The vast majority of us are still basking in the glory of a brilliant gutsy effort on Sunday but you choose to pick a fight with the one or two who mention 96. Nice try at deflection.

Maybe it's because you don't want to answer why, with everything to play for like Bob Quinn, much better form and Norwood losing three players to injury, you still weren't able to beat us. Maybe it was John Cahill's stirring pre-match address? Nice one Tim.

Can we play you each week?
