A disapointing end to a disapointing season

Postby eaglehaslanded » Tue Sep 09, 2008 1:52 pm

Well Speptember is here and the Eagles are unusualy not competing. I must start by saying that Sunday turned out to be a bitterly disappointing end to what had been a very frustrating and disapointing end to season 2008. Where to from here. What do we do to improve. Should Ronnie stay or should he go. The season although disapointing wasn't all bad with the promise shown by several youngsters Broadbent, Hall, Corbett, Lane, Goldsworthy, Daniel to name a few (how many of which are we able to keep). It is fairly clear recruiting needs to be at the top of agenda though - some names I would start by signing would be Biglands, Skipworth and McGregor if he's not traded (rumour has it that Melbourne are very interested in him though). A fully fit Cicca at his best would be magic to see combined with these other names it could very well make 2009 more enjoyable to watch.

Anyone else's thoughts are more than welcome.

If I were an Eagles fan I would be disappointed ... Personally I reckon their best is as good as any, but they left their run too late and it proved too difficult to makeup the deficit in the end of season scramble.

Still have an excellent core group (spine is excellent) and as you mentioned some good kids ... With the right recruiting they could (and probably should) be around the mark again next year, finding replacements for the likes of Colville and Cica is never going to be easy, for any team.

Cica's not gone yet - but how long will he remain for. You are correct though they will be difficult players to replace though.

Yeah I know he's not mate, but you didn't see much from him this year, and I wouldn't have thought he'd be around too much longer.

I am disappointed that we didn't make the finals, but at the Eagles we are Committed to Succeed and are Determined to be Great, and that is what we are trying to do with the Reserves and the U19s in the finals.

FFS... another Norwood supporter coming out the woodwork & off his bandwagon to sink the boots in, surprise, surprise... err... finish 9th or finish 4th, makes no difference Pal, still did Sweet FA for the season.

As for us...

I said @ the start of the year that we'd finish 7th... (see post)
Lindsay was a HUGE loss.

Recruiting MUST be a priority for the club to move forward... SPEND some MONEY... Biagi was a SHOCKER, no more like him please !!!

We'll be back 8)

Were in a difficult situation now , as this years token effort re recruits , means this area has become super critical for us to seriously challenge in 09 . The problem isnt even evident yet as the best kids will be drafted ; Salter , Petrenko & Mcgregor are not even ours & must be looking to play at the next level ( maybe interstate ) , plus no shows like Passa & Schwarz ( Colville ) . Factor some of that into the mix & Fullers got a huge task with limited funds , thanks to our tight arsed Board . You would think collectively they would realise out of roughly a dozen recruits McEntee , Twomey , Wright , Mackie , Gogoll , Biagi , Corbett , Couch , Malinowski , Miles , Elliot & Jacky .......... ( Im of the opinion Wright & Corbett are good pick ups ) that the budget their giving Fuller to win a flag with as of this season , is beyond being achieveable ! The collective output of those recruits plainly tells any reasonable supporter whose watched from March to September , that its mission bloody impossible ! Have a look at our side on Sunday against Port , and compare the differance to the 06 Grand Final side if your still not convinced ! I say open up the purse strings & back the coach in , because kids & B grade recruits dont win Premierships , never have , never will !

Looking back four weeks ago this is where the Eagles should have been .But they strung 3 wins and almost sneeked into the five .I did say the eagles needed 3 miracles and only produced 2.
IF in round one they had got the win over north 40 odd points down and lost by 1 point .but if is a big word in footy
No excuses WWT did not recruit well enough and needs to buy a ruckman midfielder back man small forwards .ETC ETC
What they also need is some pace its all well and good playing the old guys .But when you drop youth with pace for old age know how and the other mob is full of pace you arent in the hunt!!!
Next year if not drafted the likes of J Redden ,Jolly,Goldsworthy etc etc will need to step up .And the other young ones like sumner Hill will also need to come up .
BUT the EAGLES BOARD NEED TO GO FORTH WITH MONEY AND RECRUIT PLAYERS IN THE 23 TO 27 AGE GROUP.You know to old for the AFL but great at SANFL LEVEL.
And lets not just look at Victoria with so much footy on our TV screens from all over Australia the recruiters should be told go forth and bring home some players.
So in a nutshell its time for another 10 yr plan no more missing out on finals
