Former SANFL football umpire and of course international cricket umpire, Colin Egar was buried today, aged 80 at a private service this afternoon.
I think he officiated in a couple of SANFL Grand Finals back in the 50's and here is what Nine MSN had to say about Colin today...
ninemsn wrote:Col Egar, the international cricket umpire who stood in the Brisbane tied Test of 1960 and later called fast bowler Ian Meckiff for throwing, has died at the age of 80.
Egar, who was chairman of the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) from 1989-1992, died in Adelaide on Thursday. A private funeral service was held earlier on Friday.
The famous tied Test between Australia and the West Indies was the first of Egar's career. He went on to umpire 29 of the 30 Tests played in Australia during the 1960s.
He was at the centre of a major controversy when he no-balled Meckiff from square leg in the first Test against South Africa in 1963, also in Brisbane.
The decision, which led to the end of Meckiff's career, resulted in death threats and Egar was for a time given police protection.
After retiring from umpiring in 1969, Egar became an administrator with the South Australian Cricket Association and later the ACB (now Cricket Australia).
He managed a number of Australian tours overseas, registering a formal protest at the standard of umpiring in Pakistan in 1988.
"He gave a lot to cricket and the Australian game is all the better for that," said CA chairman and fellow South Australian Creagh O'Connor.
Sad news for South Australian sport and of course the cricket and football world. Deepest sympathies to the Egar family and friends.
