Kids never accept their parents as role models when the pubescent hormones kick in - it is not called "adolescent rebellion" for nothing.
It is part of the process of differentiating themselves from their parents - the problem is they then focus on someone in the public eye and are high risk on modelling on the most rebellious and appalling example they see because they are rebelling.

Part of being a good parent is trying to make sure the external models they see to choose are reasonable ones, and that involves trying to maintain a society with reasonable limits on the example set.
If you are lucky with their genetic make up and maturational capacity, and you do a good job as a parent, they may grow out of it.
Fev obviously didn't..

Do 'rebellious' and 'appalling' go hand-in-hand now?

Better crush expression, sanitise the minds, strive for that Orwellian dream.

God forbid the youth see a dildo a year before they start trawling the internet for porn.

Read that as "most rebellious" and "most appalling" - two separate components. I'm sure that would be obvious if you were not looking to be picky...
We just don't have to shove dildos in the faces of much younger kids, or of older people who have had more gentle lives, in such a public way that they can't choose to avoid it.
No, rebellion is not automatically appalling, and I've done my share, but I've never been appalling. Irritating I'll concede...

The media shoved it into people's faces and then cried foul. Sheesh, bad role modelling is drink driving or domestic abuse. Next sensationalist story please...

Mike Sheahan's take on it - http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,24285171-19742,00.html. He paints the scenario well at the beginning.

The best line comes from a reader comment (a South Australian, to boot) - "The bottom line with Brendan Fevola, is that he only cares about one person".

You're right, it is the perfect summation of Brendan Fevola. I also liked Sheehan's comment that "Fevola doesn't think like the rest of us in his waking hours". He could actually delete the words "Like the rest of us" for accuracy.

I know a lot of people out there are Fevola fans, but that doesn't alter my opinion of him as a borish oaf, and no amount of deeds performed on the field will alter that.

Anyone can make a mistake, but Fevola has turned it into an art form.

I was thinking of the people in and around Federation Square actually, but of course he is not so moronic he wouldn't know that it was bound to be all over the media.
I do agree though that in a better mannered and more responsible time the media simply would not have publicised it. It should not be done, AND it should not be given publicity. Both are to blame.

Like AH, I respect Fevola's football skills, but I think very little of the man as a man. A real man behaves respectfully toward other people.

I can understand why/how you come to that conclusion mate, but we're not all built the same, some would say a real man doesn't judge others (not having a go at you, just saying we all have different principles) ... FWIW I don't think Fev always does the right thing, but those of us possessing an irresponsible side, can perhaps relate to and find humour in SOME of his antics (whilst not always condoning them).

On-field Johnny Wynne and Macca might not have always conducted themselves aswell as others, but they were still idols to people and weren't the ones that instilled within us the values we uphold in life as individuals.

I agree CP. JW was a shocker off field. My wife worked in sound and lighting when she was at Uni, including at the Relegs Disco and the Meadows festival, and she knew most of the players and media of that era. I have been involved myself in little tricks like turning someones VW beetle around 90 degrees in a tight parking place. [We did hang around to turn it back around for him, and not leave him stuck.]

John Wynne was employed as my mate's driver - to and from school - during his playing days.
He has some stories to tell!

I reckon that at the end of the season everyone on SA Footy should have a mad Monday then they would see what proper behaviour is all about

Well I'm sitting here sipping a little green Chartreuse and its only Friday. [Yes, for those who don't know, "green Chartreuse" sounds odd but there are yellow and white variants.]
