Senior Umpires

Postby HeartBeatsTrue » Mon Sep 01, 2008 12:30 am

Except for Richard Williams, the so called senior umpires are all carp and need to give the caper away. I've been apalled by their performances over the last few weeks. The less experienced umpires see this and copy their carpness. If there isnt enough umpires out there, then reduce it to 2 field umpires each game.

Why doesnt the SANFL drop these senior umps to the ressies after a bad game? Just because they are well known and/or have had AFL experience doesnt mean they are automatic league selections. Sick of seeing this week after week!

I can't agree, hbt.

I have heaped praise on one of the umpires at Westies this week in the West v Centrals thread.

Quote:

"I think it's time to have some understanding for the tough job the umpires have and today we saw a perfect example.

Poor umpire Tony Dey. No doubt out to impress and then saddled with the worst run of luck an umpire could have. No matter how hard he tried to be the officiating umpire when the free should obviously been awarded to West Adelaide, it just never seemed to happen. It was lucky for the other 2 umpires that they weren't saddled with the same problem, but for poor Tony, no matter how hard he looked for a West free, in all conscience he just couldn't find one. Now, the meaner observers could perhaps have thought that several of the line-ball decisions might well have gone Westies' way, but you have to give credit to Tony - he stuck to his principles and wouldn't be swayed and that sort of courage is what we want to see in an umpire and I, for one, applaud it. As a West supporter I was disappointed to have a few celebrations for goals cut short by Tony's courageous decisions, but you had to bow to his steadfastness.

I marvelled at the numerous 25 and 50 metre penalties he handed out and admired his ability to differentiate between seemingly similar contests to penalise West when all and sundry thought they might be rewarded.

What a relief I felt for him when he found an inside 50 free for the Bloods when the game was all but over.

My admiration is even higher when I consider that his performance at Westies games is always the same.

So thank you, Tony, for adding so much to my day. My team wasn't good enough on the day, but at least there was something to celebrate " Unquote:

So I'm definitely not with you on this one.

Why is Richard Williams excepted? His performance at Alberton yesterday was nothing short of disgraceful. He had some mates, but his decision-making at times was bewildering.

I don't generally single out umpires, but I thought his poor performance yesterday warranted a mention...

LMAO, count the number of mistakes made in a game by umpires in a game and then compare it to the number of mistakes made by players, - you'll find the umpires make less mistakes per game than the players or at worse they break even.

I say this as yesterday at times I found myself getting worked up over decisions but in the cold heart light of the day after teh umpries made less mistakes than teh players yesterday at Alberton. Only one real howler the holding the ball decsion paid agianst Pannozzo that gifted Port their second goal. Even then under the letter of the law it was there (the ball was held in and no real attempt was made to get it out) but totally agaisnt the consistancy they've paid all year for holding the ball - i.e. they havent paid it and it has been a ball up.

What made it all the more bewildering was that 10 minutes later Richard had the same scenario in the guts Port player took the ball into a contest got tackled the ball was bottled up no attempt made to get rid of it and he made teh correct SANFL interpretation may ball fellas.

So apart form that one inconsistancy it was all good yesterday at Alberton.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

That is a carp comparison.

Do umpires need ball skills and kick or handball to a team mate? Do they have to evade tackles when they do have the footy? Do they have to rely on team mates being in position to receive the footy from them? Are they under pressure from opposition players? I dont think so.
They just need to stand there (or jog) and watch the play. They should be making no where near the amount of mistakes that players do.

Interesting to hear this thread get a bit of air time on the 5RPH show this morning...

I agreed with CK's sentiments though, I don't think the "senior" umpires should be singled out, as a whole they ALL have their bad days, as do the players from all clubs. The umpires, in general, do a pretty good job and while we all love to hate them, I think they do a much better job than their AFL counterparts.

I made a comment in the call at the Port v Glenelg game yesterday that I think they are more flexible with the holding the ball rule in comparison to their AFL counterparts. At times, certain officials can pay the "ticky touchwood" ones or miss blatant frees but at the end of the day, if the talent is coming through, the senior umpires that are still running around officiating shouldn't be so harshly criticised all the time.

Chris mentioned this morning on RPH that the SANFL is looking to bring the next generation of whistoe blowers through with a couple of guys getting their league debuts in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see at the seasons end whether the likes of Richard Williams and Tim Pfieffer go around again in season 09 and we will wait and see this time next year as to who is copping flack as the poorer umpires in 2009 ?

All I ask for in my umpires, is consistency. The past few weeks, the Bays have had frees paid against them, in the opposition team's forward line. Similar actions occur at the other end of the field, and the calls have not been the same.

Is inconsistency the new consistency?

I thought the umps were far better yesterday than they were the previous week. Yesterday they made a few giant clangers, but last week they were just inconsistent all day.

But of course you had a few beers before the game, so everyone to you would have been "maaaaaaaaate".

Players make mistakes because the opposition pressures them into making it. What's the umpires' excuse? 8)

Not saying its easy at all. Of course they make mistakes. Just saying they are making way too many mistakes in the games I have seen in the last few weeks, and they think its ok because they continue to get a league game week after week. When an umpire is clearly out of form, no matter how experienced, should be dropped to the reserves. I never see it happen to a senior umpire.

The comments about "Its ok for players to make mistakes" and "players make more mistakes than umpires" doesnt cut it as a comparison. If a player makes a lot of mistakes, and continues to do so, they get dropped until they show some form again. Same should be for umpires, which it seems it only happens to the less experienced.

The SANFL wont discipline the senior umps. These senior umps should know that and give it away and let the ones that are up to it take over.

Go and have a go at umpiring HBT,even at 'parklands' level it isnt an easy caper.

I have done some junior footy and I could not imagine what sort of job it would be to do senior football, thankless is the term I think.

Where would our game be without them? What game......

Do I have to repeat myself again? I guess I do.

In a nutshell. Some senior umpires are in poor form. They need to be dropped to the reserves until their form improves. The SANFL doesnt act upon it.

I have never said that its an easy job. If you want to be an umpire at SANFL league level (highest level of footy outside AFL) then you have to be pretty good at it. Only 12 field umpires each week can get this honour.
I have never claimed that I would do a better job. Thats why I'm not an umpire and never plan on being one.

Thankless jobs I know. So are 90% of all jobs in the workforce.
