U/17 Second Semi 2008 Sturt v Port Magpies @ TBA

Postby scott » Sun Aug 31, 2008 1:35 pm

Sturt finished 19-1 at the completion of the season, lasting 19 matches with wins before the very team they face in the second semi trumped them by a solitary point in their final minor round game.

It's a chance for the Double Blues - far and away the best side in the competition this season - to avenge that loss and book a place in the grand final, however, Port has the artillery to pose a serious threat to Sturt. Perhaps even the only side.

These sides met in last year's preliminary final, which Port won through. Whilst the sides are almost entirely different since then, it does continue an intriguing battle between these clubs at this level.

Fixture details won't be available until tomorrow after the AFL has announced their final's fixture for week one and the SANFL make any necessary changes to the league fixture as a result. Probably looking at a 10:30am start next Saturday at Norwood Oval prior to the U/19 match between Norwood and Glenelg at a guess.

This should be a cracking game.

Sturt will probably fall over the line, probably the better team accross the park but not by much.

Johnston v Solly will be a key to the game. Sturt will be looking for O'Malley to continue to dominate.

Port was the only team to beat Sturt and that was at Unley. But Sturt should win.

This game is at Woodville Oval at 10.30 am.
Sturt will be in The Eagles Rooms (I think)
Port will be in the away rooms.

Sturt's 17s side are a very good side as I have seen so far this year, can't see them losing the GF should they make it.

Tend to agree that North with Tapscott, Armstrong and Johnston (all state under 18's this year) back in the 17's after playing reserves football are the team to beat. The problem for North is that they will have to get past a reasonable Glenelg outfit and very good teams from Port and Sturt.

Having said that I think sturt beat a similar North adelaide outfit in round 2 or 3.

Sturt probably still pavourites but not by as much as you would think a team that has only lost one game all season would be.

port impressed me with their height and structures on Saturday I can see them playing teh 17s GF this year.

Glenelg have a few kids playing who if they were at other clubs would have played a lot more 19s or even reserves footy (Armfield to name but one). I reckon we can knock off* North this weekend.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Head to Head records:

Played 161: Sturt 57 Port 104
Finals 8: Port 4 Sturt 4
1st Semi 2: Port 1 Sturt 1

The last time these two sides clashed in an Under 17s final, was in the Preliminary Final last year; that match was won by Port, 23.21 (159) to Sturt 11.4 (70). Port also won the last 1st Semi meeting, in 1991. 19.13 (127) to 12.8 (80) was the score. Sturt beat Port in the 1980 1st Semi, 22.13 (145) to 5.5 (35).

Sturt beat Port earlier in the year by 10 points after Port kicked 7.17...
Sturt throw the ball around a bit by hand, and Port will look to pressure them as much as possible to turn the ball over.

If Port are on they will be hard to beat. They beat Glenelg last week, with none of the key forwards firing at all.

North have a good line up, altho all the stars (except Tapscott) played last minor round of the year against Port and North fell short.

Massive result from Woodville. After kicking five goals to 3QT, Port kicked 10 in the last quarter to steal an incredible victory after trailing by 50 odd points at the last change.

Port Magpies 15.8 (98)
Sturt 14.10 (94)

Port into the GF, Sturt plays North in next week's prelim.
