Some radio station should apply to pick it up.

I can remember when it was broadcast on 5KA with Tom Warhurst, as kids we would get the pencil and paper out on the kitchen table, write down the names and votes as they were called and had our own Magarey Medal night at home, Mum or Dad would do the tallying of votes as we couldnt count fast enough to do the totals as well, it was real exiting, more so than watching it on the tele.

Bring back the good old days, living in the past has plenty going for it.
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

Just a sign of the times .... just let it go!

There are two Magarey Medals pre 1992 - the real Magarey Medal - and post 1991 which is equivalent to the SAFA or SANFL medal and it should have been renamed.

Maybe so, but there have been some pretty good players to have won it since 1991. Mark Naley, Nathan Buckley, Garry McIntosh, Josh Francou and Andrew Jarman are some who spring to mind.

Yes, without question.

But does it mean as much as Barrie Robran's, Russell Ebert's, Len Fitzgerald's, Malcolm Blight's, Michael Aish's, Fred Philllis's etc medals?

Why wouldn't it? It's awarded to the Fairest & Most Brilliant player in the SANFL. It shouldn't be devalued just because the standard isn't as high as it once was.

For the record, I'm not a big fan of the Magarey Medal anyway, simply because a lot of people tend to use them as a measuring stick as to a player's greatness. As we all know, some great players never won a Magarey, whereas some good (not great) players had a very good season or two and walked away with a medal.

I also don't think 3-2-1 for each match is a good enough way to judge the best player for the season, but that's another argument.

I always argue that Peter Marker was every bit as good a player as Russell Ebert, and yet Ebert gets all the kudos and is compared with Robran because he won 4 medals, whereas Marker missed 2 medals by 1 vote.

I have no problem with players such as James Allan or Jeremy Clayton being hailed as Magarey Medallists.

I got to know former Channel 9 Boss, Mark Colson through business (good bloke). But as soon as I heard about his sacking, my first thought was the Magarey Medal telecast. Good old WIN TV; Profits before people!

This is all that matters. Who cares if the VFL came to town?
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Why don't they just rename the SANFL to something else as well? :?

Duckworth was not fairest in '79 either- I believe a charge was handled lighly, due to him being required for State duties, ultimately costing Peter Cloke the Magarey

I was there that day because a mate of mine was playing his first league game for North Adelaide. The Duckworth incident occured right in front of me, and how he managed to escape the charge is beyond me. He was clearly guilty of the strike.

The irony of it all was Duckworth and Cloke stood each other that afternoon and Cloke thrashed him. Had Duckworth been ineligible, Cloke would have won the medal.

As for McIntosh, he actually did lose a medal because of being ineligible, so he could have woin three of them :)

Well that's something I guess. Should be broadcasting it on TV however.

Well, that certainly takes me back. I can't recall the first year the Magarey Medal was telecast, but I have faded memories of listening to the count on the radio. Can't recall the year, or who won, so I must have been very young at the time.

Anyone know the first year it was telecast live on TV?

P*** weak Channel 9 ! Yet another SA tradition down the tubes. Most SA football deserters.....ahem I mean supporters wouldn't give a toss anyway ? The true one's do !

If the medal is changed to the SANFL medal, then the Brownlow should be changed to the AFL medal, as the Brownlow is awarded to the B&F in the VFL !

Therefore the AFL is still the VFL in disguise

Don't blame C9, blame the SANFL. Why the hell would you have the MM after w2 of the finals?

So you think C9 should show the MM which rates poorly and has no interest outside of SANFL diehards or show the Pelim Final AFL Footy Show? Its a no brainer.

Blame the SANFL.
