Rnd 22 - Eagles v Norwood - REVIEW

Postby Big Phil » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:14 pm

I know the game is still going but 52 points up half way through the last term it is all but over...

Well done to the Eagles, reckon they'll have a few finals teams worried a bit...

FINAL SCORES:

EAGLES: 17.11 = 113

NORWOOD: 8.8 = 56

Eagles by a very comfortable 57 points...

No doubt there will be some happy Eagles fans...

Norwood fans will of course be dissapointed in their sides effort...

Post away people...

They have to get into the finals first but on todays performance you are on the money if they do, next weeks game says it all I guess

Well if Glenelg win tomorrow Norwood will play finals footy unless it is a draw next week.

With Port and eagles on 18 pts only one of them will finish fourth on 20 pts, Norwood will be 5th on 19 pts, and the loser of Port and eagles will miss out.

Mind you Norwood can still will next week.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

From a crowds point of view we want Norwood in the 5 and the Eagles to miss out.
From a competitive and interest point of view we want the Eagles in the 5 and Norwood to miss out.
Why don't both clubs alleviate this issue and merge for the rest of the year?

Based on one game? Just recently Norwood thrashed Sturt and ran Central to within 2 points.

Nah, based on a season of observing teams playing at their best, at their worst and at what level I'd expect them to play.
Basically comes down to odds.
Going on your theory I'd have more weight on Norwood as they beat North comfortably twice and the Eagles couldn't beat us.
Doesn't work that way though, Eagles will be much more competitive at the business end of the season if they make it.
Im not stressed if they don't, just looking for competitive matches from a SANFL fans point of view.

Eagles worst would see them lose by 10 goals, Norwood's worst would see them struggle to kick a goal.
Eagles best would see them be competitive in a Grand Final, Norwood's best would see them competitive in a middle of the table clash if the other team has a poor day.

Only my opinion from the 20+ games Ive seen this year though. Ive seen more of Norwood than any other team besides North and the Eagles wouldn't be far behind them.
There's a bit happening behind the scenes at Norwood too (much moreso than the Eagles) which adds to a bit of lack of stability.

Another solid effort by the Eagles. With Treeby and Klun out of the selected side and Wright off early in the first quarter with a bung shoulder as well as Norwood having 3 goals on the board to nothing, things weren't looking good. However, the Eagles worked their way back into the game through the likes of McKenzie to close the gap to one goal at quarter time and the use of the breeze in the 2nd term. It was fairly tight for the first half of the 2nd quarter, until the Eagles blew the game apart with the last 4 goals and led by that margin at half time, when the rain came.

It was always going to be hard for Norwood to get back with the game turning into a scrap in the mud after half time. This suited the Eagles, as they were more willing in the conditions than their opponents. Norwood barely gave a wimper and the Eagles, led by McKenzie, Jarrad, Powell, Grocke and Fitzgerald, dominated turning in an easy 57 point victory.

The Eagles still must win next week and will be relying on Glenelg to do them some favours, by beating Port and Norwood. If Norwood win next week and Port win tomorrow, the Eagles will need to beat Port by a fairly healthy margin to get ahead on percentage.

Norwood were pathetic after the 10 minute mark of the first quarter.

Dabrowski, McKenzie, Broadbent, Jarrad were a class above and will drive how far the eagles get.

The eagles will beat port next week so they will play finals and if norwood make the finals they will not be a threat anyway.

As I thought when the rain came about half time, the game was as good as over. Something like that from me would almost be unheard of considering my lack of optimism. It's just the way we seem to do so well in wet conditions, coupled with the footy over the past few weeks that's how it turned out. Passador kicked 2.5 today, bringing his tally to 299 career goals, Fitzgerald returning to the side kicked 5, Jarrad was prominent early. But the decisive quarter saw one player above all. Yes, Mark McKenzie. How did he get all by himself in the goalsquare? He won clearances, went down back, went forward, whatever, that guy is amazing.

I had the pleasure of watching the game today with Glenelg (and SANFL) legendary loyal supporter bayman, and he speaks very highly of him; agreeing with me that he can play in any position and never lose his cool. Macca, keep it up though, we need at least one more performance like that this year. :)

Agree with most of that unfortunately Wedgie ... I think there's only a bit Norwood can address/improve in the remaining weeks, yet there's plenty we could improve in the off-season, whether we do or not is another matter.

Not quite sure what you're alluding to behind the scenes at Norwood, particularly with a destabilising influence (PM me if you do want to discuss here, Im interested).

After watching today's game, whilst I can think we can improve I don't think we were as bad as I have seen us, I think that would be unfair to the Eagles, who are harder, more efficient and play with the composure that experience this time of year brings ... Whilst winning from 5th is near impossible, I reckon the top 3 would be happy to see them gone because they are capable of taking at least one of their scalps, personally I rate them.

Well that's the second miracle one more needed by the boys.
My heart sank when I heard Klun and Treeby were out when I arrived at oval ave. That and my seat being taped off by some twit videoing the seconds and the mini league  lucky it was not a sell out or we lost I am superstitious about where I sit etc at a game.
BUT thats two weeks in a row the Eagles have given the other team a head start .No way could the Eagles do that to Port but thats a week away yet.
The umpiring was bad for Norwood today but they also didnt help themselves that rather late elbow to the head was a a footstep away from the ump .And why did the Central umpire have to award a free in a marking contest when the controling umpire stood arms length away and saw nothing .
Sorry redlegs your skill level was very bad today before the rain came fumbling and bumbling the ball .And young Aish was as bad as reported in the other thread.

Well done Eagles both teams won today selection problems this week but the good kind .
And a very special mention to young daniel robberts you certainly showed me .some fantastic marks and what a running goal he kicked .

great gutsy win by the boys today

who ever picks up Broadbent in the draft is going to get a very good defender

the great thing is the pressure being put on by the boys in the seconds

our reserves side would have given the league side a go for their money today

we are winning because our backline has settled and returned to their best

still some good players out injured too

well done eagles

Probably micky was talking about seating in that stand, ala the South match when everyone was in the stand.
