Centrals gear up for a second gaming venue

THE Doggies are almost certain to apply to open a second gaming venue with 32 pokie machines after Playford Council declared its support for the concept this month.

Central District Football Club had tested the waters with the council ahead of lodging a formal application with the council and the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner.

While a council committee rejected the idea first, it was over-ruled by the full council on August 12, which voted 12-2 in support.

Central president Tom Zorich, addressing the council meeting, said the club needed to increase its revenue to fund its football operations and community projects.

Cr Dennis Ryan, who supported the Dogs plans, said Playford had halved its funding to the club to $50,000 over the past decade and this was likely to be reduced even further in coming years.

Cr Andrew Craig said more pokies would be “ripping off the most vulnerable people” in the community.

Under the footy club’s plans, the extra machine licences would be transferred from the Elizabeth and Salisbury bowling clubs and another undisclosed club, to the Dogs Goodman Rd headquarters.

Central CEO Kris Grant said the club would now look at applying to the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for permission to house the extra machines and lodge a development application with the council to build the new complex. “It’s nice to know that they’re not going to object in any way.”.

Anti-pokies campaigner Senator Nick Xenophon said the state and federal governments needed to provide more funding to sporting clubs so they did not have to rely on pokie machines to fund projects.

“The fact is young people deserve support from the government for these things, for training and for sport,” he said.

Im with Nick X,sure raise revenue, but at what cost to the community?

The $$ are good for the clubs but the wives/husbands/kids/brothers/sisters that are negatively impacted upon by these money eating machines far outweighs the benefits to the licence holder IMO.

I know they are a massive source of revenue.....just shows how much money people pump into them.Sad really.

I'm not 100% sold on the idea. I was comfortable with the club taking over operations of the other clubs (although article is incorrect - Elizabeth bowls and Elizabeth rugby are the 2 additional licences we hold) because they were existing machines in low use clubs. Adding them to the Goodman Rd complex makes me a little uneasy.

If Aussies are stupid enough to continue to blow their hard earned money (or dole-cheques) on the bloody things then why not make money from it.

How does any of that mean a heroin dealer couldn't use your argument?

Seems fair.... :D

I think the Dogs should think of the Grass Roots Supporters more....

Better a club that might be more likely to support anyone in trouble than a pub who only care about money. I'd rather not need the things at all to be honest, though.

It does smack of feeding off your community and a lack of ingenuity, these are the days though and easy money will be greedy money.

I doubt it will succeed but good luck to them if they do.
Its better than the machines just being sold to publicans and them becoming even more rich, at least the money Centrals make goes back into the community.
Well done Dogs.

The Penrith Panthers currently own 36 venues in NSW, clearly a similar scenario to that will be the future for SANFL clubs that want to survive! It could well be that in the not to distant future that we look back to the days when the club "only" had one or two venues! :?

on the NRL is it true that Russell Crowe got rid of all of Sth Sydney's pokies because of the damage they were inflicting on their fans and community.

I don't like the fact that North are a financially successful club mostly only because of their pokie machines. But people are going to pour their money into them wherever they are, so I guess it is just taking advantage of a bad situation.
