Eagle News #8 - Woodville Heritage Day + Jumper Auction Info

Postby cd » Mon Aug 18, 2008 5:48 pm

Amazingly, with 3 games to go we still sit only one game out of the five. With our improved form over the past couple of weeks and with most games now at home, we still have an opportunity to get to the finals. This week is a huge challenge for us against Glenelg at Woodville on Saturday.

It is also a special day in that it is our WOODVILLE HERITAGE DAY. This is last opportunity to get a replica jumper as we have now covered the 3 styles of the West Torrens and Woodville clubs. (Large Eagle, Torrens sash, stripes of both, Woodville Yoke and now the Warrior jumper)

It will be great to see the Green and Gold Warrior design as we honour the Woodville Football Club.
Hopefully there will be a big crowd as this is a very important game for us.

The jumpers will be for sale on e-Bay immediately after the game – don’t miss out!

Check the results of our major lottery for 2008 – on the club website as are all the results of the weekly match day raffles (In the Eagles raffle ‘ere!)

Also on the website are the weekly articles by Tom Couch and are always an entertaining read.

MEMBERS NIGHT – each Thursday at the Club

This is a great testament to Eagle fans as although we haven’t performed as we’d all wish the vast majority of members have stuck by the club. Thanks to all who have joined up – your support is very much appreciated.

There will be Woodville players who played in the Warrior jumper as guests on saturday - i expect will spend a fair amount of time discussing 'old days' over an ale or two.

The past players function should be good at half time of the league too.

So many good memories for Bays fans playing against the Warrior jumper, Will not be an easy game but if our boys turn up with their minds focussed on teh doing teh business like we have shown for all but 3 games this year - should be a typical Tigers V Warriors result.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

So Glenelg will win by less than a goal, thanks to a dodgy call by the goal umpire?

Maybe not typical, but IIRC that's what happened the last time the Bays played the Warriors at Woodville...

I don't know I was at Glenelg that day watching a young Craig McRae make his debut for the 17s - he kicked 8 from a forward pocket... Hello I think we might have found one....

I believe that the 88 team was the only league premiership for Woodville - think it was still the Escort Cup and Woodville defeated Port Adelaide.

Spelly may be able to confirm and give details.

Some of the players continued on and played for the WWTFC in 1991 including our first captain Peter Schwarze.

There was the Coca Cola cup in 1973 that Woodville won, but that only had 4 teams participating.

These players played for the WWTFC as well as Woodville:

Andrew Colbey
Ron Fuller
Garry Haylock
Steve Jacquier
Randall Jolly
Darren Klemm
John Klug
Robert Lynch
John Martin
Colin McDonald
Stephen Moore
Romano Negri
Garth Newton
Andrew Rogers
Peter Schwarz
Andrew Taylor
Stuart Totham
Robert Trkula

Colbey, Jacquier and Jolly only played in the Foundation Cup of 1991, and Rogers and Taylor went to the VFL before returning to SA.

My Error - Woodville won 2 night premierships according to our web site

"Woodville, to its credit, was able to win two night premierships, the Coca Cola Cup, in 1972 and the Escort Cup in 1988 "

Some of those llisted will be attending on saturday - thanks to Sturt having the bye Stuart Totham will be able to attend. I hope to have a list of the players from the winning 88 Escort Cup team who can make it on saturday confirmed shortly.

The jumpers arrived today and are sensational with the Warrior head design sponsor free as Hills have agreed to their logo being on the shoulder. Hopefully the photos will be on the web tomorrow.

We are really pleased that so many of the players of the winning 88 Escort Cup team have been able to confirm their attendance tommorow at Woodville for the WOODVILLE HERITAGE DAY.

Looking forward to seeing and hearing stories from folk like Ian Dettman, Gary Haylock, Steve Jacquier, John Martin, Des O'Dwyer, Trevor Pierson, Peter Schwarz, Ralph Sewer & Stuart Totham. We expect few more Woodville greats to attend too.
