R20 Glenelg v North 2008 review

Good effort by North today. Key points for me:

We gave away 4 junktime goals in the 1st half, 2 in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd,
We lost O'Hara to injury very early on which meant we had to pull Stewart out of the forwards to do the ruck work
Rudolf had a good game on Alleway and shut him out of the game, leaving only Dodman, a realatively inexperienced forward up front. If we had been able to keep 3 talls up front, it might have turned out differently.
Glenelg were just too strong in the end. We take the lead mid-way through the last quarter and then seem to just stop. Our backs went to sleep for 5 or 10 mins and it was all over. You just can't do that against sides like Glenelg.

Two costly turnovers from the kick out (why didn't we just bomb it long down the corridor and use the breeze), and then a couple of snoozes where we didn't stand the mark or left it expecting a behind, and to their credit the Bays capitalised and put on 4 goals.

To be fair I think the final score flattered Glenlg as it was a much closer contest to 29 points suggest. No quarms though, umps sounded poor today, but they sounded poor for both sides and Glenelg got up and dug that bit deeper than North in the end

The game was played at a torrid pace today with lots of frees missed both ways. What we see from the boundary the Ump cannot possibly see as the play is going away from him.

What I did see was Glenelg play as a team for 90% of the day and North only >70% of the time. Some have said that this is not the coaching, but I think it is as the drills set up player thinking/reaction. I saw Bay jumpers spread around the fall of the ball so that most of the time they had someone to give it to and then another coming through for the second give off. A well drilled machine. Yes the last 2 games have been an improvement in the way North play, but too late.

A team of champions will not beat a champion team, and we have the players to make a champion team but have no structure/plan/process to bring it together.

My observations were that:
-North's disposal and decision making were often terrible. Such a shame watching it.
-The Bays had the numbers at the ball much more often than North. However, Glenelg were not that impressive.
-North's key players were quiet.
-The Glenelg fans near where I was sitting seemed much more interested in the (male) streaker than the actual game.
-Great weather for footy and a decent crowd. Plus, finally new toilets at the southern end.

jtc is spot on, the final margin flattered us, didnt have a focal point up forward all day until a clearly unfit todd grima stood tall and just about won the game for us singlehandedly in the last 15 minutes of the match, looked like we might run away with it early in the third but full marks to north they wouldnt go away. They had us on our knees at about the 10 minute mark of the last after having kicked 5 unanswered goas from midway thru the 3rd to hit the front, but some great running by our midfield coupled with girmas heroics saw us home. A huge amount of work to be done by our boys if we have any serious thoughts of going top, we have been off the boil for about 6 weeks now, our much vaunted forward line struggled to show much potency imho until grima stamped his authority, i may stand corrected, but plenty of improvement needed over the concluding stages of the minor round for me to think we can go top.

ditto to that stampy. Glenelg was in 3rd gear all day. It took North hitting the lead 10 minutes into the third for the Bays to finally shift into top gear.

They'll want to start ramping up for the finals Real Soon Now.

Not a bad effort to beat a side that is still a good one (well 100pts to the good of Centrals compared to us) despite spending 3/4 of the match in 3rd gear.

I thought Allan was great for North if he didn't get it he put pressure on our centre square players so we didn't get many real clear centre breaks until the last quarter. The loss of O'HAra clearly hurt North as once Trev got on top in the last quarter it was a case of "where do you want it boys?" we got the last six centre clearances in a row with two of them leading to goals IIRC.

Two hard games coming up in the next two weeks that the boys are well aware of. Winning at Alberton and Woodville will be two nice hoodoos to break and will go along way to sewing up the minor premiership.

i yelled for deliberate, ok the field umpire said 'throw it in' (fair enough that's his decision)

i said to the boundary umpire (the third one not in the play) ''that your mate made a blew there'' i was astonished to get this reply

''deliberate out of bounds is not a free kick in the sanfl''

That's obviously why he is only a boundary umpire.

The defining moment in the game was the streaker, North had a run on and had just hit the front, the streaker does his run across the game,
Glenelg turned on the ignition (translation = Gays were turned on ) and never looked back.

Good effort by North but as has been the case all year just not good enough against the top 4 sides. Injuries didn't help our cause with O'Hara going off early as it clearly reduced our tall forward options with Stewart having to ruck most of the game and Alleway well held. His injury in terms of the two sides was balanced by Backwells injury for the Bays.

The "real" big loss and game turning injury IMO was McIntyre who up until he went off had held an underdone Grima goaless but as good players do they bob up when they have to and he did and kicked 3 last quarter goals. Our defence is small enough without losing our tallest defender. The other "turning" point was Gallman's poor handball in the last quarter when we were in front that ended up with Grima's first goal and that was the critical mistake. Glenelg is a side that keeps pressure on all day and they capitalise on those sorts of mistakes.

I didn't think the streaker changed anything in terms of the game but in all the years I have been going to the SANFL that is the first time I have ever seen a streaker. Funny stuff!

He did ruck for short bursts to give Stewart a spell after O'Hara went off.

Happy with the win...I didn't think we played anywhere near our best, but North were pretty good...

As stampy said, we never really got out of third gear, but once headed by North, we woke up and put together 10 minutes of sensational match-winning footy.

Didn't see the streaker either...but someone rang up Nova 919 this morning to speak about how all the boys got together to shepherd the streaker from security and helped him escape over the fence...

I thought the normal voice from the North supporters was down a bit yesterday. Can North fans confirm/deny that the North contingent in the crowd was much less than normal?

I listened to the first half on the radio and it actually sounded like the North fans were louder, I even made mention of it on The Roost at the time.
Didnt hear any of the 2nd half.
Disappointing crowd figure though but no suprise.

Yep, about 8 guys shepherded the barely interested Welso guy. If I remember corrrectly he slid under the fence. Ouch!

Glenelg fans definately got loud (& interested) when the streaker did his thing- definately the highlight of a Glenelg fan's day...
Apparently the Snouts were drooling, black & yellow hawaiian shirts broke out everywhere followed by plenty of talk about the Village People, & then when Glenelg won, they played Pride of the Bay!
