2 More Retirements at Prospect

Postby Wedgie » Thu Aug 07, 2008 7:37 pm

This week has seen Matt Krieg and Shannon Motlop retire.

Hopefully we'll have 21 players left to still play in the last round this year. :(

Questions must be asked what is happening at the hallow turf out there and how many more may be on the move before the end of the season

Was just over on the North web site and noticed this announcement about Shannon Motlop and Matt Kreig. Congratulations to both boys on a great SANFL career, in particular Matt who of course started out at Centrals and I guess a little unlucky to not have a premiership medal with us from some of the early 2000's success.

locky, it's pretty obvious that these 2 retirements were personal decisions and had nothing to do with some of the interesting off field going ons down at Prospect in season 2008. Matt retired due to extra work commitments, a young family and being honest enough to admit he can't commit to the club 100%. While Shannon's body is obviously not holding up to the rigours of SANFL any more and sounds like he will be heading back to Darwin at season's end. Obviously has family up there and I think he works for the AFL and indigenous footballers.

Again, well done to both lads, good luck in the future and locky, I do agree with the last part of your post. Will be interesting to see any other player movements from the Roosters once the season is finished.

Not sure these are purely personal decisions. Perhaps personal situations make it easier but the club's position would have to have an impact. Were North sitting top and everyone was happy would these guys be playing out the year?

Jars' lustre is in need of some Mr Sheen. I don't think he's a great coach, but what he brought to North was respect and enthusiasm. He made people believe in North again. He made them respected and even feared as a team. His contribution cannot be questioned IMHO. But was he the best person to take the club forward after last year? Was he going to be best able to help the team take another step? I thought not. I think not. I think a more modern coach is needed who understands the current game better than Jars, because I think the game has just past his thinking. A recent player like a Daniel Healy, Ben Hart or a Scott Lee perhaps might have been the best choice if willing or available. Or maybe try to beat West for the services of Andy Collins. He's off the menu now but I think North and Jars all need to take an honest look at things. If the coaching is the best it can be, then leave it. If not, the club has to be bigger than the individual, regardless of the contribution or standing of that individual.

Rated Matt Kreig very highly. Used to carve us up regularly and enjoyed how he played.

Well said Graham, this year reminds me very much of 2003, although we've had a few more wins, players were "retiring" in 2003 in a hurry too, a change of coach and the club improved 500%, of course an injection of funds helped.
Hopefully if another coach comes in we improve as much as we did from 03 to 04 too, doubt it would be that pronounced as money isn't an issue now but hopefully its still a good improvement in 08.
A lot of boots to fill though.

Continuing on with the public push to remove Jars...

I presume Jars knows who you are Wedgie? If so, when you see him around the club, do you both just walk the other way, or do you speak, or are you just another keyboard warrior attempting to spill the great man? What about D. Jarman? If you're speaking this way about his brother Andrew, I presume that your relationship with D. Jarman is as shaky???

Far be it for me to defend Wedgie, but I think he's been pretty forthright about his opinions on Jars and might well have told him so personally. I understand Jars has made some fairly pointed comments in Wedgie's direction too.

You've got to feel for anyone that is subject to ongoing comments of a negative nature on such a public forum.

Unless Jars logs on as himself, what opportunity does he have to publicly respond to the criticism or negativity?

It's tough but when you become a public person, you open yourself up for such comments.
Jars has the satisfaction of knowing that he's had a reasonably successful career and his football will provide him with plenty more opportunities in life.

All I was doing was agreeing with Graham that perhaps its time someone else took over to take us that step further, like he himself did in 03/04.
Only chatted to Jars a few times but we've got along fine, in fact the last time I talked to him and advised him of what I'd said online about his coaching he was appreciative that I was willing to tell him to his face unlike the keyboard warriors TB refers to.
Jars one one one is a different guy to the public persona and Ive enjoyed chatting to the quieter Jars.
In regard to Fud, Ive chatted to him several times and will continue to be it around the pool in Darwin or out the front of the clubrooms, he's a great guy and I really enjoy chatting to him.
My comment about hopefully having 21 left for the last round was said in jest, of course we're going to have enough!

I think that is an entirely appropriate way for North Adelaide to conduct their business. Like you, I think Jarman has been good North, but he's done his job, it's time for someone fresh to come in with different ideas and take them further.

I think the relationship between Jars and the NAFC has surely become untenable...surely Jars cannot continue to work at the club, when he knows many of the supporters and his own players are "knifing" him publicly.

This thread is about North.
Feel free to start one up about the other clubs, or our club MT. Could break SA Footy records for the number of pages on a thread about the Bays coaching merry-go-round prior to Mickan's arrival.

That's right - some idiot even had a go at Roy a couple of weeks back. The odd detracter goes with the job of being a coach. I am not sure that public opinion is the key criteria for selecting a coach. I would look at their record, vision and evidence of a positive influence on the players and the club culture if I was selecting a coach.

You've got to wonder about an SANFL coach that will have a go at AFL coaches on TV when his own side is'nt doing that well this year.

He has certainly responded publicly before, presentations, etc. etc,

.................and yes, Jars does know who Wedgie is, and Locky, and Drebin, and .......................................

BTW TB, is your obsession with North and it's supporters a healthy one ?
Serious question, I'm concerned for your well being, I'd hate for you to end up bitter and spiteful like the rest of us.

Serious TB - you have an "expert" opinion on just about every topic on this forum and make "sweeping" and ridiculous statements at times. I'm sure half your intent is to "bait" which you are expert at but a smiley at the end of your comments doesn't lessen your intent. I just wish the Bays would collapse back to the bottom of the table so you can disappear again like you did prior to half way through 2007.
