This coming Saturday a group of young, not-so-long-ago arrived people of refugee backgrounds will be attending Prospect Oval to witness their first Australian Rules Football match. They are originally from countries including Burundi, Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia. They are part of a mentoring program called FUSE and some will be attending with their mentors. Please make them feel welcome and come and say "g'day". The FUSE Mentoring Program supports young people from refugee backgrounds to achieve their social, personal, study and work goals by matching them with volunteer mentors from the Adelaide community. FUSE enriches the community by breaking down barriers, creating partnerships and increasing cross-cultural understanding. You can learn more about FUSE (or possibly become involved) by visiting http://fuse.sabaptist.asn.au/ or by telephoning 8231 4849.
A number of children of refugee backgrounds have taken up the sport of Australian Rules Football. Some are playing on Saturday mornings for primary schools in the North Adelaide zone. These kids are showing lots of potential. It is quite possible that in the not to distant future some of these kids will be running around Prospect Oval wearing red and white.
