Not the best of footy by Sturt today. Our disposals at times were woeful. Good return to footy for Wicksy and Evans. I liked Crane, Kurtze, Gum, Herring and Fittock. Kurtze and Fittock really impressed me. I've been critical of Fittock previously but his game today was very good.

Perrie looked as though he copped a big hit (or kick) to the "lower abdomen" and was apparently taken to hospital (hope they didn't swell up too much!) and Coady came off with what looked like a twinged hammy.

Good to get the win but not overly convincing...

I said earlier in the week that I'd be happy if the Eagles gave a committed 4 quarter effort and that, they did. It was a very young side, but they gave their all and showed some of the spirit that has made the WWTFC a strong club since the turn of the century. Sturt are a top 3 side and their supporters will probably be somewhat dissapointed with the way they played, but they did enough to win and that in itself is a sign of a good side.

The Eagles started with a strong breeze that pretty much favoured the southern end for the whole day. I thought it was worth about 3 goals. It was a slog, but they managed to get out to a 3 goal lead before Sturt scored just before the siren to close the gap to 2 goals at the first break. McGregor was strong at CHF for the Eagles.

Sturt quickly closed the gap and snuck out to a 2 goal lead in the 2nd quarter. The Eagles did score the last two goals to break pretty much even at half time. It gave hope that with the wind in the 3rd quarter, we could try and gain a lead that we could hold on to. However, it wasn't to happen. The 3rd quarter opened up a bit early, but still no goals could be scored. The Eagles should have been allowed a goal with Daniel snapping from 40, but the umpire decided a goal was too much of an advantage, so made the free kick go back to Redden, which he missed. Hier then was immediately pinged holding the ball down the other end (again a sh*t decision) and Sturt goaled and therein lied the turning point in the game.

Staple goaled from 50 after the 3 qtr time siren to give the Eagles a lead of 5 points. A betting man would've still backed Sturt, but there was hope. The last quarter was riddled with costly Eagles errors which Sturt were good enough to capitilalise on and that was the difference in the end. Sturt were a little more polished and the Eagles just couldn't finish off.

The Eagles missed Hentschel in the last quarter, who must have been injured. Having said that though, Sturt were missing Perrie since the 2nd quarter and another of their players limped off in the 3rd. The Eagles best player I though was Luke Powell. McKenzie and Dabrowksi were a close 2nd. Goldsworthy was impressive in his debut as a 16 year old and McGregor played a fairly solid game.

The wind was not as strong in the last half, but I agree in that six points is not much of an advantage in the third. However, in the last quarter it seemed to be. Sturt seemed to be better in the air, but we matched them very well on the ground. I'm very proud of the effort which was put in today, but the bottom line is that it results in zero premiership points. But bring that game to next week, and we should be able to keep that faint pulse going.

By the advantage, I mean it sarcastically. The same sort of advantage was allowed to Sturt in the last, but all ifs and buts do not take away from the fact that Sturt won. McKenzie IMO, was close to BOG, it's not his fault no-one seemed to be on him, but he was everywhere.

We were woeful for 3/4's and took us a long time to sort out some sort of skill level, missed handballs, dropped marks, over running the ball, kicks not hitting their mark. We were very lucky to get a win with a strong last 1/4. Costly win with Sarge going to hospital, Coad hamstring injury, and Herring reported which surely will come to nothing.
Last of all the umpiring was disgraceful, alot of holding on not paid today, in the back was almost non existent and then they suddenly pull one out of nowhere. Frees being paid to a player when an obvious free had not been paid seconds before to the opponent. When Herring was reported a 50 was given, later Passador(?) was reported and 10m given????? What the hell were they doing. Anyway the crowd sent them off.

I don't blame umpiring Dog_ger, I can also recall frees we were lucky to get or lucky not to give away too. The highlighted decision above cost us 5 points though, but in my book, you should be able to win the game without any help.

One free very few would have seen in the last was one that was paid off the ball. It ended up with a miss by Passador, but what it was, Treeby was slung behind play by Feast I think, then a 25/50 whatever it was, was paid.

The Eagles had a real chance to win today but as usual our disposals were terrible. Adam Grocke or Ben Schwarze wouldve been handy today :?

Eags couldn't have tried much harder than they did today but butchered the ball with poor skills. Sturt got quite a few of their goals from our errors. Sturt looked much more efficient going forward than we did. Our kick ins leave a lot to be desired. Powell, McKenzie both great and Hier did well on Chambers. Love the run Broadbent and Petrenko add to the side.

I Agree they were shocking today easily the worst display of umpiring I have seen all year. Even an Umpire from the reserves standing in front of me was cringing at some of the decisions made today.

Sturt played very well agaisnt 21 players on the park. it was a very ugly win but they are the way sometimes games are played in the finals. Herring stepped up especially after Perrie came off injured.

Good to see a Lockleys boy do well, I was suprised he didn't line up against North a couple of weeks ago after a pretty good debut.

His old man coaches the A grade at Lockleys and has taken the juniors for a few sessions this year, top bloke and a very good communicator, the kids loved having him pass on some words of wisdom.

Was at this game today doing the boundary riding for LifeFM...

Was a very entertaining and hard fought game today with a scrappy win by the Double Blues who looked very much below their best at certain stages throughout the day. In saying that, I thought WWT were pretty valiant in defeat and some of the Eagles kids really impressed me with some of the Sturt turnovers a result of both skill errors on their part but really good pressure from the visitors. A pretty intense style of game with a few injuries to come out of it. Perrie copped that knock midrif and was taken to hospital but I have since heard that he is going to be okay and will be cleared from the Royal Adelaide by 8pm tonight. Trent Hentschell jagged a hammy for the Eags and Michael Coad will miss the next 2 or 3 after straining his hamstring once again.

It was a very vocal crowd today that helped cheer the home side to a tough win but there was a bit of frustration vented towards some, at times, horrible umpiring decisions. Had an interesting experience for most of the day having to sit next to a very passionate and frustrated sturtpeter who felt obliged to remind the umpires that along with their poor performance today, they were to blame for a grand final loss back in the 70's. Good to see SP doesn't hold any grudges. He was very animated to say the least, downing a few bourbons and "spitting" out his disgust at some of the umpiring decisions. I thought Luke Crane was a bit down on form for Sturt today but Jade Sheedy was at his best, Tristian Gum is a quality footballer and was BOG for mine, while young Patrick Fittock and Nick Wark were good in defence. I also thought that Ryan Herring had an influence when Perrie went down injured, especially in the last term.

Usual suspect Luke Powell and Mark Mackenzie should be amongst the Eagles best while I was impressed with young Mathew Broadbent, Jared Petrenko and first gamer Matt Goldsworthy showed promise. Ken McGregor was good early for the Eags but faded late and at the end of the day the Eags just could quite do enough to pinch the most unlikely of wins. Zac Heir was okay on Chambo at times but that was mainly when the Sturt on ballers were not delievering the ball to their number 7 with too much convivtion. Brant showed in the last quarter that he is the best FF going around in the SANFL by a long way. I thought that the umprining was a bit off par but wasn't as bad as some people are making it out to be. There were some very technical decisions paid as well as a couple of blatant ones not paid but I don't think it was that bad that it actually influenced the result.

I thought the Eagles were maybe 1 tall short and although I don't know why, Ben Schwarze was a late withdrawal from the side after initially being selected to come back in after playing reserves the week before. Andrew Whiteman was also a late withdrawal for Sturt after he pulled up sore with a slight back injury sustained in the win over Centrals the week before. Also confirmed after the game in the commentary for LifeFM that Ryan Herring was reported for charging, but it didn't seem too bad and I think he'll be alright while I didn't see the incident first hand, Mark Passador had his number taken for what the umpire demonstrated as an elbow to Jade Sheedy's head. Well done Sturt, good win, very enjoyable game of footy and enjoyed being up in the commentary box with John Nankerville and Glenelg's Paul Sherwood for the last 1/2 hour of the broadcast after Phil Herden had to leave early to do the SANFL show on 5AA. Good day of football with pretty good weather and a fairly decent crowd in attendance, my guess would be around 3,500 - 4,000

I noticed Passador indicating that it was his shoulder that made contact. I think the book seems to be used more than any other time I've known this year.
