Who is the best player in the comp?

Postby LBT » Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:59 pm

Warren Partland regularly refers to Jeremy Clayton as the best player in the SANFL.
Who do you think is? I reckon he probably is with Jimmy Allen next best.

if clayton had his head screwed on properly 100% of the time he would be, obviously callinan, allen, backwell, crane etc could all claim the 'title' but the smokey would be (imho) torney
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Too many players to choose from but Allan (again spelt with an A after the two l's!) right up there as is Alleway who must be close to the best key position player in the SANFL.

As a Sturt supporter I'd have to say Sheedy or Chambers. Clayton's too undisciplined but I'd agree Allen is pretty good...

I know he hasn't played much in 2008, but I'd pick Callinan, with Crane a very close second.

Clayton is the best for mine no question ... Is prone to "brain explosions" which IMHO hurt his team, but the PAM's finish well in front on him.

Id say Clayton as well.

The thing that puts Clayton ahead of the other smalls named is his ability to play as a marking target in the forward and his contested marking ability. Allan is probably on a par with Clayton as a pure midfielder, but doesnt have the ability of Claytons to play as a genuine forward.

Ill use yesterday as an example of what I mean, but in the last quarter he moved forward, played on Torney who played 195 AFL games (and the majority of Crows supporters were shocked at his delisting) and is over 10cm taller than Clayton...in the first 6 minutes of the last quarter Jeremy kicked 2.2 and dished a goal off to Waterhouse. game over.

Clayton has the best mark of a non-KPP ive seen at SANFL level. Probably AFL level too.

As I said, Allan is probably on a par with Clayton as a midfielder, and Callinan is probably on a par with Clayton as a small forward, but Clayton is the complete package.

I think its incredibly dissapointing that pure footballers such as these dont get a look in at the highest level. Clayton (and the other two) would have more natural talent than half the players on an AFL list.

In terms of talls, id say Alleway is the most talented non-AFL listed tall in the league.

His free kick stats this year are 29 for, 21 against.

Can be undisciplined, but has improved a lot this year.

Todd Grima, took ten weeks to get into the SANFL grove but is now showing his class.

Yes centurion we are very happy we paid what we did to get him to Brighton Rd

http://www.safooty.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16713

In reality it is hard to split Sheedy, Backwell, Clayton and Allan (no particular order) as each on their day looks a class above the rest of the competition.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
