Because they were constantly arguing amongst themselves as teenagers do, and Darel said stuff it, one of you can play at the dogs and the other stay at Prospect - let me know when you've worked out who's going where. :) :)

I gave them a lift to Elizabeth Oval yesterday, they both nearly didn't make it!

Nicholas (playing for Centrals) proudly told us at the end of the game that he not only flattened Matthew (playing for North) in a tackle, he stood on his hand in a pack at one stage. Brotherly love.

I'll give a bit of a summary/report after the week is over DW - can't be bothered tonight, would involve far too much thought.

Noarlunga is the other venue for tomorrows games.

Philby, everyone had dark glasses on. The coach is quite tall, was wearing a white polo. I was next to him in navy blue CDFC jacket.

Are the divisions split on a "strength of pool" basis or to establish two conferences given the country teams are there as well?

The latter.

The top 2 teams from each division go on to the semi finals on Friday - 1st place in Div 1 Vs 2nd place in Div 2 and vice-versa.

The two winners play in the grand final. For the country teams that is this weekend, Sunday I think at Norwood Oval, metro grand final is at AAMI stadium next weekend as the lead up to whatever AFL game is on.

Question for smac.

Do the clubs have different attitudes to this carnival? Do some take it seriously and try and win it while some just field a couple of teams or do all nine clubs take similar approaches?

I think if you asked any club, the line would be about developing juniors and that a win is a nice thing to have on top of that. My experience in dealing with clubs is limited to Centrals and genuinely that is the objective.

The nature of this competition is that one bad day can ruin the championships - only 3 games to determine if you make the semi finals (and getting 15 year olds to do as instructed is tough on any basis, let alone every day during school holidays). Having said all of that, everyone loves winning and now that we have a sniff of the semi finals we would be disappointed to not play tomorrow.

We haven't played against a lot of the clubs too much, but my experiences with them over the last few years would go roughly like this:

North - winning a high objective, seems to be a recent swing toward club game plan being taught at the junior levels.

Norwood - winning a high objective, long term use of the same game style (hardly changed at that level since I played against them 20 years ago). Very systemic, one of the better development squad programs - Oatey has been doing that job long enough to run a pretty well oiled machine.

West - game plan/player development higher objective, haven't seen them for a couple of years but anecdotally appear to have lost their way compared with 5+ years ago.

Eagles - appear disorganised but only see them once every year or two so that could be just a bad impression.

Sturt - haven't seen or heard enough of them to comment.

Port - have a good system working for them, seem to have one of their worst performing teams in a long time this season - probably part of the good/bad cycle that happens in junior footy.

South - only saw them for the first time in a few years when we played them on Monday, couldn't comment (although they presented very well as a group and played a good style of footy).

Glenelg - don't see them too often but appear to have got their act together in more recent times (coinciding with the appointment of Mickan and his attention to this aspect of the club from what I hear).

Now that I have typed all of that I'm not sure it really answers your question. I was about to delete it all but figured someone might be interested.

In hindsight I could have worded that differently - they are my tip to win the competition this year, a very good side. They play the typical Norwood style of footy which is not a bad grounding, provided they are adding components to the game plan as the kids progress through 17s and 19s.

Apparently Norwood defeated North this afternoon, meaning Norwood are top in our division, Central second.

West & Glenelg were the two semi finalists from the other division, I am unsure of their ranking though.

Semi finals are tomorrow at Thebarton oval.
