So?
We don't seem to have a problem with Tigers (Richmond, West Tigers, Glenelg, Claremont & Melbourne - NBL) or Bulldogs (Western, Canterbury-Bankstown, Central District & South Fremantle).
Don't tell me that the AFL or the NRL think that the unwashed masses can't tell the difference between an Queensland australian football team and a NSW rugby league club? :-k
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

I presumed the "rays" was a shortened version of "stingrays"? not sun rays but I might be wrong

A lot of the existing nick-names were created before branding and trade-marking became such big business - so you have lots of Tiger and Magpie emblems from 50 years ago when they weren't used like they are today.

These days it's a lot different, once someone else has trademarked something like a Shark emblem it gets too hard to register your own version and market it. I think in addition to the Cronulla Sharks there were issues with the Southport Sharks and even Greg Norman  The sharks was GC17's preferred choice from what I read.

'The Sharks' was also the Adelaide FC's first choice as I understand - but they also ran into the same trademark problems as GC17.

So it's easier to find something new and run with it - hence all these new options. I always thought Stingrays would make a good name for a team however I picked Marlins because I like the way it flows with Gold Coast.

West Adelaide Hellas, called themselves the Adelaide Sharks for a little while in the NSL. Probably wise for United not to venture down that path...

Hahaha Ironmen. I can't believe that is a serious option.

Rays is also terrible but at least they have their #1 ticket holder sorted.

And the winner is, drumroll...........

"None of the above"

I think this is a smart move by Gold Coast, don't force a moniker on a club, let it evolve like the original VFL clubs.

As I heard it, and according to their web-site, the nick-name is TBA

It doesn't say they aren't going to pick a one

EDIT: I may need to retract this after doing some more research
