It is good to see his back and hasnt given up the go... He does have talent, dont get me wrong but I think if he had a different last name he wouldnt have gotten half the games he did. The unfortunate thing here is he may well be faulting under the expectations of a harsh football croud. Fans and Geelong may have expected to much out of him. Good luck to the young lad anyway.

Well its good that hes back, but christ the way Lonergan has played he will struggle to get a game in the senior side.

I can't see him getting a game this year, the Geelong side is really starting to hit it's straps and i wouldn't have a clue who they would drop.

No you are wrong bubba. While the Ablett name gave him a foot in the door at Geelong, it didn't give him a walk up start to the league side. Prior to the 2007 season Nathan Ablett had only played a total of ten games. In one of those ten games he booted four goals against the then all powerfull West Coast Eagles (I think it was only his second ever game). In the premiership season (never get tired of typing that), Ablett kicked over 30 goals for the year, a figure that compares well with players such as Jonathon Brown and Antony Rocca in their first full season in the game.

This is remarkable because the kid never really wanted to play league football in the first place. With a half arsed approach to his footy he still got the goals on the board and was a key player for the Cats in one of our greatest ever seasons. The only reason Nathan Ablett should play football for Geelong in the future is if he is prepared to work as hard as Tom Lonergan. Cripes, think of how good he could be!

Well, I guess it is better to be honest with the team and go away and think about it than to keeep on playing for the money, but not really putting in the effort because you are not really motivated.

There's a bit of that around in some teams.

Yes, there will always be a question mark over Nathan now, no matter what sort of form he is in. I doubt he could attain the appropriate level of fitness in time to fit in with Geelong's 2008 finals campaign.

GEELONG coach Mark Thompson has ruled out any chance of Nathan Ablett returning to the AFL this year, but said the premiership player could play in the VFL in as early as a fortnight.

Ablett trained with the Cats' VFL team on Monday, his first foray back into football since his shock retirement in January.

Thompson said yesterday he was pleased to see his former forward back at the club but it was too early to speculate on the likelihood of Ablett making an AFL comeback.

"This is just a small step, I don't think we should read any more into it than that," Thompson said.

"We haven't screened him yet, so we'll just find out where he's at physically and he might end up playing in a month, five weeks or two weeks, we're not sure yet.

"He's well-liked and it was his decision to come back and we supported him 100 per cent again.

"I don't think there's any way that he'll get back into the AFL team (this year), even if he's super fit and played VFL and played great footy, I just don't think it's going to happen.

"He has no intention to play AFL (at the moment). He's just happy to come back and play in the VFL."

Ablett pulled the pin on his promising AFL career after just 32 senior games.

The club retained him on its list in the hope he would make a return.

Thompson said both Tom Lonergan and Tom Hawkins had capably filled Ablett's role in front of goals.

"We think that he's a talent, but the players have pretty much moved on and we've lived without him," Thompson said.

"The fact that he's come back, that's a good thing too, but it's not going to make much difference to the mood of the club.

"We've moved on and it's great that Tommy Lonergan gets a game and Tom Hawkins, with or without Nathan, the club was going to survive."
