How vital is Cranston to the Bays?

Postby MST » Mon Jul 07, 2008 11:33 am

Just thought I would pose the question and get some opinion from the Glenelg supporters and SANFL supporters alike.

IF Cranston did go down with an injury, who would fill the void? Do Glenelg have any depth in the ruck division?

When Sturt lost Feast & DeLuca for the Bays game we had Angus Kurtze come in and do a pretty good job against Cranston.

Seb Guilhaus was BOG for the State U20's a few weeks ago. Lachie Button looks ready to step back up. James Sellar is doing a good job as a relief ruckman and Trent Grosser is developing very well.

So I reckon we are doing ok in the big man stakes.

Guilhaus has been getting in best players in the 2s and is ready to step in if Cranny went down wouldn't be as good as Trev but is a more than adequate replacement. Lachy Button can come in too.

Trevor is an imprtant player, no quesstion, but we have some players who along with Sellar can do a job if required.

Interesting to note though that when Sellsy went off with a blood rule late in the last qtr, Trev was kept in cotton wool and Grima went into the Ruck
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

GRIMA took the first centre clearance and then Duldig took the second

Cranston has always been a really good competitor at Glenelg but his form this year has been probably career best. In saying that, he represented the VFL against the SANFL at Adelaide a few years back in the embarrassing match where the vics smashed us. Glenelg have some good young back-up but his in and under and clearnce work would be impossible to replace.

I agree with the points made by the other posters here.

Trev is super important to our structure, and he gives so much more to our side than just his ruck ability...

He could not be replaced and matched 100%, but we do have some other kids running around in the lower grades that would certainly need some time at league level to prove their worth...

I think our midfield brigade is good enough to win centre clearances by reading the tap-work of opposition ruckmen (if Trev was to go down), but having said that, his tap-work is super important to the success we've been having thus far this season.

He's massive for Glenelg. Second efforts are second to none. Definitely the "ben Hudson" of the SANFL. Recruited from Springvale in 2003. Spent a fair bit of time at CHB in his early years. He's 27. Nearly lost him at the start of the last 2 years (in particular the start of 07)... was 50/50 to play. Lucky for Glenelg he made the decision to stay.

We do have some good young ruckmen as mentioned by the others
But, yeah hes pretty important.
Probably not as important as what Chambers is to Sturt though.
If you guys lost him, you'd need a few blokes to really take a step up.

Agree with you about Kurtze. I thought he was great against the Bays.
Although i had Cranston as my BOG. But more for his work at ground level than dominating the hit outs.
Yeah, Naah,..... Bollocks!

I see Trev's importance to the Bays side similar to that of former Centrals champion ruckman Paul Scoullar. The reason Glenelg are really dominating, like Centrals have done in recent years, is because they have a very talented ruckman who is getting first hand on the footy, down to a very good midfield who have pace, use the ball, work and run for each other. Cranston has developed superbly since coming over from Springvale 5 or so years ago as I remember watching him in the 2's for the Bays a few years back and he was struggling at reserves level. I think at the time Glenelg's league ruckman was Michael Griffith and then Daniel Kirk and Trev played second and third fiddle for a while before getting an opportunity to step up as he has done this season. He is in carrer best form no doubt and playing awesome footy.

Much like Paul Scoullar at Centrals who was 3rd cab off the rank behind Damien Arnold and Radlee moller for a few seasons, he served somewhat of an apprenticeship in the magoos before taking the next step up to be one of the dominant big men in the league. Trev's work rate is pretty impressive and his around the ground efforts are of a super standard, much like Scoullar's was. How the hell Trev didn't get a state jumper this year is beyond me, he is by far and away a better ruckman than Dabrowski and is probably on an even keel with Parry, who I also rate. If Trev does go down with an injury, I think the bays might not be exposed in the middle, just maybe brought back to a level playing field with some of the other clubs. Would be interesting to see what money is on Cranston for the Magarey, he might get a lot of 1's and 2's votes and then the odd BOG 3 voter here and there, he could be a smokey ??? When was the last time a ruckman won the Magarey ??? Cue Spelly ???

Unfortunately the ruckmen, like forwards, don't seem to get the umpires attention, as the ball-magnet midfielders do...

Yes, that would be correct, the former Essendon and Sydney big man won it back in 2001 from memory ? Didn't he win it with former St.Kilda ball magnet and fellow Port Magpies player Tony Brown ? Did Rhino end up out a North Adelaide for a couple of seasons after he left Port ???

DeLuca would be worth a goal or three to the Blues.

Feast is worth about 0.6.

I think he is an important cog in the centre but as other have said Lachie Button and Seb Guilhuas are able to do the rucking, actually I would like to see him rested this week and elevate one of the two mentioned to give them some vital league experience in the nightmare that Cranny may get injured come the business end of season.
