Round 15 Sturt v South Adelaide Preview

Postby CK » Sun Jul 06, 2008 6:04 pm

I don't normally start these preview threads, but noticed one interesting sidelight from this game. Only 2 matches have ever been staged at Murray Bridge for premiership points, and South lost the first game in 1954 by 36 points, while Sturt lost the other match in 1995 by 25 points. Unless its a draw, one of these clubs will have a record of having lost at Murray Bridge every time they have played there.

Johnstone Park is an ideal venue for SANFL, should be a great excuse to make the trip up the Freeway for the last rural based game this year.

I reckon that 1995 game was against Norwood.
Not too sure but I remember going to a Sturt game in the country and getting very drunk, not sure if it was a trial or even if it was at Murray Bridge. Just remember that we lost (hey it was 1995, what did you expect?) the car was parked close to the boundary, and I got real drunk.

Yes, was against Norwood. 16.17 (113) to 14.8 (88). David Pittman was best for Norwood and if I remember correctly, this was his last game for Norwood.

The other game was West 11.11 (77) to 6.5 (41). BTW, Johnstone Park is better known as the home ground of Murray Bridge Imperials, across the road from Murray Bridge cemetery (no omens meant to be read into that).

The only interesting thing about this match is whether Sturt can top their previous winning score against South which is probably a likely result!

Still it is a good thing to see the SANFL going into the country areas following on from West vs Central at Berri last year, I have no doubt that plenty of local support will be there for the match which wont hurt the profile of the SANFL to much!

That actually sounds like the one Smithy. Come to think of it, it was probably earlier than 1995. If this information fits with Strath' then it is probably the one.
How did you know? Cars on the boundary?

It's the only game I can think of around that time that wasn't played at Murray Bridge.
Yes car were around the boundary at Strath so that could be it.
I remember it was quite windy if that helps, and we had Simon Dennis at full forward who cost the club a fair bit and was a dud.
In typing that, cause we had the funds maybe strath was played in 96.

Not sure now.

Be funny if Moggy actually read the post out on air as "Smiley, wink, yes smithy it was 1996..." :)

South? No, I am pretty sure it was Norwood we lost to on that very drunken afternoon.
Did Sturt play Norwood in a pre-season game in the country in the early to mid-90's? Perhaps it is Mannum I am thinking of? We did a pub crawl on the way up there, I remember passing through some Northern suburbs pubs on the way there. Does that fit with Mannum?

No Wedgeman, personally, I'm taking a few weeks off to do some H.E.M.P. work.

I was at Strath that day. And it definitely was South. I was sitting inside the fence the entire game.

When I started reading this thread, I thought that I remembered our last "out of town" game was v South. Back in the days when, if we were competitive then we'd go away from the ground happy.

I don't remember much of the game however, I've tried to block most of my memories of those years out.

Was Scott Sutherland still playing. IIRC he was in our best that day?

Surely you people jest that I'd dispute Spelly's facts!
What I meant to say was that the game where I got very drunk involved Norwood. So obviously the South game at Strathalbyn was another game where I got drunk. Actually this thread is very illuminating, I can actually remember the South game at Strath now, but I only had a 6 pack or something that day.
But I think Gadj has captured the mood of the Strath match very well with the phrase "Back in the days when, if we were competitive then we'd go away from the ground happy."
Very very true.
