Evening Grand Final?

Postby Hondo » Thu Jun 19, 2008 3:07 pm

AD seems to have opened the door again (under pressure from the TV networks) on an evening (5pm I think I heard?) Grand Final. Possibly as early as next year.

My view is it would be good actually - and it would be something that once you broke the seal we'd wonder why we didn't do it before.

But I bet there's some strong views the other way!

I'd be to pi55ed to watch it

Evening means start on the Beers at lunch.....

I prefer the day GF. Having been to a couple nothing beats waking up, breaky, stroll along the Yarra to the G, few bevvies,
watch the game, then that night to celebrate or drown the sorrows...

We've had enough changes, surely we can keep one tradition ?
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Picture a normal September day. Fine and cool - early to mid 20's perhaps.

If a game starts at 5pm the first half would be fine and dry conditions. But after half time, the ground would become dewy and the game could become a different game to the first half.

Another question - has anyone thought of the players themselves who would've been sitting around since early morning burning up nervous energy? (rhetorical question of course - the answer would be no)

Most major sports play their GF at night, why should AFL be different??

I would love to see the MCG host a night or twilight GF and have all the other curtain raiser games on starting at 2pm on the tele, would make for a long and good afternoon!!

Im with REB ... If it's not broke ...

As another poster pointed out, the elements are usually more game/spectator friendly during the day than night also.

Picture a day of light showers, the game starts at 2pm, its fine and dry. But after half time, the ground would become wet and the game could become a different game to the first half.

Or, Picture a day of light showers, the game starts at 5pm, it rains for the first half starting at the approx 3.15pm and stops at half time, thanks to the game being played at night the ground then becomes dewy and similar conditions to the first half hence making it the same game as the first half where if if it was played during the day it would have been played in 2 different conditions.

Honestly Gadg, there's some good reasons for and against but that's not one of them.

I'd only be for it if the SANFL prelim was moved to the Friday night before where it rightfully should be.
Twas hard enough backing up last year after a Cats win during the day let alone one at night. :?

No way! The day Grand Final has too stay!

I've only seen a handful of Grand Finals in my time, but I love Grand Final Day, just waking up in the morning and getting the whole feel for it, words can't describe it.

If they change it they are ruining years of history and risk losing alot of fans, i don't think the fans will take too kindly to this idea.

The fans (us) would watch it if it was on at 1AM! None of us are going to boycott just because it starts 3 hours later. Arguably more could watch it in the evening than during the day.

There's pros & cons for sure - but think of the potential of an entire GF day going through to 9pm! You could show a curtain raiser at 2pm maybe - or just hours of pre-game stuff I bet we'd all be glued to the screen to watch. An entire day's build up v a morning :-k

In the US the entire day being set aside for the Superbowl has become an institution.

Just food for thought .....

Keep it at day. NRL tried having the GF at night, now they are going back to day GF's as I understand.

You blokes really think the Big Bosses at AFL House will listen to the little people?

Who runs footy fixtures? The TV rights holders.

Do the Tv rights holders think a evening/night GF would work? Yes.

Will we have one, whether we like it or not? Better your bottom $.

The AFL became very much all about $$$ when it changed from the VFL to the AFL, it was for the $$$ that the VFL became the AFL.

Sure enough a twilight Grand Final will happen if the Coin from the networks is enough!

Are AFL clubs that are struggling financially really going to oppose a further financial windfall?

Good point mate, the clubs struggling with money are less than likely to play in the GF,therefore they wont care what time it is played, not perhaps for a few years until they have a squad capable of getting there.By then, the money will have saved their skin and they would play at any time.
