On the assumption that I am right - and I know I am 'coz I just looked it up on Wikipedia  - here is the replacement question:

What was the final song (and the performing artist) on the last-ever episode of Countdown?

(I mean the last episode of the actual Countdown series which was broadcast in 1987 - not the ill-fated Countdown Revolutions which replaced it a couple of years afterwards)

Were they ever invited back after they smashed up the stage? 8)

It was an Aussie artist, performing live (or quite possibly lip-synching).

I was going to say Dave Dobbyn, but he's a Kiwi. I'm convinced it was him by memory, but if it's not him, I'm thinking either Hoodoo Gurus or the D Generation, who hosted. (have the tape somewhere at home)

Nope to all above.

I did a bit of research to confirm the answer, since all I have is a fuzzy memory of this artist singing live as the show segued into closing credits. I couldn't find a mention of the song which was sung, but did get confirmation that this artist did appear on the final show. Apparently the artist also featured on the first episode of Countdown...

and incidentally the abovementioned Europe song was played on the final episode according to one source - which goes contrary to my memory.
