Congrats to all SANFL fans on your strong performance against the VFL on the weekend. Too good, played strong, done fine.
Couple of comments if I may.
Can't agree with fester about the SA guernsey being for only State of Origin. It's the SANFL's guernsey that they allowed to be used in the SOO era not the other way around, surely? If the SANFL played in something different all the Vics would be asking where is your 'proper' jumper. The AFL doesn't claim ownership of the Big V and prevent the VFL or other rep teams from using it or variations such as the Vic Metro and Vic Country guernseys.
I also agree with the sentiment of a few who have said that it's pointless working out how many Vics are in the SA squad or vice-versa. It's promoted as a state clash but essentially it's an interleague fixture between the SANFL and the VFL. That being the case it doesn't matter where they came from, just that they're elgible to play. Put on the jumpers, the classic jumpers even, and get on with the game.
Lastly, it has been contended by some that the SANFL is 'raping and pillaging' Victoria in return for all the t=years that the VFL did it in the pre-AFL era. Maybe, but I don't agree. It's economics in my opinion. Prior to the Crows creation the best guys in SA often moved across to Victoria to earn the maximum they could while they were able. Many stayed at home but they were either satisfied with their earning potential through work or they were the absolute stars who earned as much in the SANFL as they would've in the VFL. Thinking, maybe incorrectly I'll admit, of guys like Cornes, Ebert, Robran, etc. here. Shit, as a Richmond supporter I can remember that we signed Michael Aish to a Form Four and he got some cash out of the club and then he stayed home anyway. Smart boy! Nowadays the guys who are maybe aware of their ticket to the AFL having passed them by decide that they might well be best off earning what they can and the monetary powerbase at state level is clearly in SA. Good luck to the SANFL clubs who recruit guys from interstate and to the guys who earn the cash. A guy like Jeremy Clayton has definitely been worth the investment for Port and I'd hazard a guess that he'll become a permanent SA resident upon his retirement. Same for the Gowans' I suppose. But you'll always get some blokes like Brent Tuckey too. Not every recruit pans out, not even back in the dim, dark days of the VFL 'raping and pillaging' SA.
As I typed that a thought crossed my mind. Anybody else reckon Clayton would be a monty to coach Port at some time in the future?
