Souths new coach?

Postby Sojourner » Thu May 29, 2008 11:18 am

Just wondering who people think might be the one to drink from the poisioned chalice next at the Panthers?

Torney,
Sampson,
Taylor,

Someone outside of the club?

How does the culture of the supporters need to change?
I would have thought that was one of the few things the club had going for it, personally.

The handful of people I see at every match have been going for many, many years and have obviously stuck around through years of shitful performances.

I work with Luke 'Stormin' Norman, he's one of iur truck drivers...

Talk to him occassionally, seems pretty happy with Rick Macgowan out at Sturt, think he is coaching the reserves side...

Reckon he would make a good League coach, eventually, but I think this is only his first FULL year as a head coach, reckon he has only been an assistant, out at the Eagles with Ricky as well, and think he took over from Donald Dickie with the Double Blues ressies...

IMHO, I think South need to promote from within, like Centrals did with Roy Laird after Al Clarkson left. I think the experienced Torney should be "captain / coach" for the remainder of the year, leaving his assistant Clay Sampson in charge in the box, esentially giving Sambo a bit of match day experience, and blooding him for the League coaching role in season 2009. Sampson just seems like a good, natural fit and would certainly be better for any experience in a coaching capacity that he would gain in the remainder of the season...

Whoever they decide upon, it's going to be a mammoth task to bring South back from the duldrums. I think, although they don't have the greatest record with interstate recruits, they need to get a couple of experienced, quality players for next season, while still blooding as many as the local youngsters as possible. Similar to Centrals in terms of geographical positioning and distant metropolitan location, I reckon they need to show faith in their zones and local players. The Doggies, while in part, have been successful with a few selective and QUALITY recruits, really, they have in the majority, given the right opportunities and shown faith in their local kids and recruiting zones to reap the benefits. The Barossa Valley and local Northern Suburbs clubs have been a recruiting mecca for a fair majority of Central's recent Premiership success.

I think South need to follow suit with the Centrals "model" for want of a better word, but really need to be settled off field, before the on field results stay to come together. I feel sorry for the Panther faithful, they certainly have had a fair bit of sh!t to put up with coaching issues and board level problems over the last 2 or 3 years, of course barring the semi succesful season in 06 when they made the finals. I think a certain player who was in the Panther line up that season and since has been recruited to the AFL, was really a HUGE blow to the sides success and following lack of it since he left. ALWYN DAVEY, who has now proven himself at the highest level, but is unfortuantley injured at the moment, was an amazing player for the Panthers and was so good at not only kicking goals but applying forward line pressure as well. I think on top of that, losing Steve Kenna, Rhys Archard and David Clarke since, has also been a huge blow for the Noralunga based team.

Good luck to the Panthers for the rest of the season and in following years. I'm sure things will slowly, but surely, get back on track...

Not sure how a coach can change the culture of a board and the supporters TB?

A coaches role is to ensure competitiveness on the field, and that's where it ends.

South went out and commisioned Kevin Morris to do a complete review of the club and to complete a report to present to the club. Doing that was one of the better things we did as a club because it laid out the problems that were there and Kevin did not gloss over anything but made quite a cutting report as a result.

One of the key features in his report was the whiteanting of the coach by several players and the support of the board of those players.

By all accounts it would seem that eight weeks into the season the very same thing has happened and it appears that although the report had the support to be commisioned, it does not have the support to have any of the reccomendations actually supported to be changed.

If we as a club are going to continually allow a situation where the coach is going to be whiteanted, how is the coaching position not going to prove to be a poisioned chalice for an aspiring coach? Who really would want to coach under those conditions?

So it is official? Jack was white-anted? Was it the players? Was it perhaps some influential sponsors and/or members of the coterie? If it was, then it seems odd that he would want to stay on in any capacity.

Hopefully it is nothing more sinister than that though...

How is his health? How is the health of those close to him?

And has there actually been a press release from SAFC yet?

OK Fatal, I think I've worded that poorly, or you are just a numbnut (before you get up in arms, Fatal and I are lovers*). Perhaps I'll reword it by saying that there is more to fix at the club than JUST the head coaching role. The best coach in the country may not be able to fix things, unless there is full cohesion from the Board and players too.

As for my comments re. supports Matt The Panther - I live down South, and I know MANY South supporters, yet none of them are proud of how the club is going, and has been going, and have not been anywhere near interested in going to South games for years. If South fix their off and on-field woes, I think the supporters will return.

I don't agree with the notion of supporters turning up when things are good, and disappearing when things go sour, but South have many more supporters than their crowd figures indicate. There are many reasons they are not attending South matches, and the challenge of the Board, players and future coaching staff is to do their utmost to change all that.

I concur completely.
When you mentioned supporters, I was only thinking about the diehards that actually show up to games, rather than those that bandwagon when we're going well.

Can remember the noise at the final against Port a couple of years ago... blew me away to see so many people getting behind us.
I guess part of this is because we're "everybody's 2nd favourite team" because we don't consistently beat anyone. Also a lot of people there for the second game would have barracked for anyone against Port, but there was no denying there were a shitload of South supporters dusting off their scarves and coming out of the woodwork to support us.

If we can perform consistently, they'll be back.

I mentioned on another thread very disappointed to see such a great coach leave the Pnathers however I think that the next coach of the Panther could be in their own backyard

Barry Pilmore has won the last 4 Premiership with Willunga FC in the GSFL and has also coached the Noarlunga and Reynella FC in the SFL maybe rather than getting a high profile coach someone that has a feel for the local area should be given a shot.

Also Trevor Potts should be considered has set Morphett Vale up to be a very successful side and is a former reserves coach of the Panthers another that could be looked at.

A few of us were only discussing this away from the site yesterday Navy...Trevor Potts' name came up, but to be honest, I think it is a completely different kettle of fish going from the Southern Footy League to coaching a SANFL League side.

Potts is coaching Norwood Reserves and after they left him high and dry last year I doubt he will be interested in taking over unless the board is ousted.
