Your memory might be playing tricks Wedgie.
Im sure the last time we played them was at Port Melbourne but SA got back in front very late with a goal to Kenna [I think] to win by 4 points and since then we've beaten WA and had a year off.

I think you're missing his point, G. Wedgie was referring to last game at Adelaide Oval between the two sides, you are talking about the last game between the two sides.

No doubt Jack has caused this thread to slip, so I thought it would be interesting to compare the likely side with the team that went to Port Melbourne in 2005. What are peoples thoughts on a comparison to this years side to 2005?

F: Chambers Schell Backwell
HF: Sheedy Cowan Inkster
C: Smith Arnott Wintle
HB: Squire Graham Hopwood
B: Roe AhChee Whiteman
R: Lindsay J.Clayton Kenna
Int: O'Hara Bassett Borlace C.Gowans

Well a truckload of then have retired since then. One has returned to Vico, one is playing ammos, and just one went onto the AFL. Might explain why the number of SA draftees has been in steady decline. SANFL is basically a retirement village for aging players from across the country becaue we offer good coin.

Also note that Schelly and Ah Chee are now plying at the other end of the park for their clubs.

On paper I'd suggest that the 2005 team would probably be stronger and has greater versatilty, but the 2008 team is potentially more efficient.

STATE OF ORIGIN FOOTBALL SANFL V VIC ????

Postby mal » Thu May 29, 2008 12:30 pm

Times have changed
For a long time the VFL used to rape WA/TA/SA and prop up thier league
For years SA valiantly tried to compete with the VFL in state games, and usually lost
In the 80s came a fairer concept called State Of Origin footy
When this came in SA became a far more competitive force when playing the big V

ITS NOW TURNED A FULL CYCLE

These days the SANFL rapes the Victorian league[and other leagues] for players
This has happened particularly during the Pokies eras
SANFL clubs now have the $$$ to recruit good Victorian footballers
Some come over for the $$$
Some come over for exposure towards being drafted to the AFL
Some wanna play in arguably the 2nd best comp in Oz
But for whatever reason the Vics[and other states players] are coming to SA to play

This in turn makes SA a stronger and PERHAPS in theory a stronger state than VIC

SA V VI

The advertiser has named the 22 man squad
I will highlight local players in print
I will highlight recruits in CAPITALS

**** If I have any wrong please correct me ********

HAYES
havelberg
schell
GOWANS
thomas
KANE
BACKWELL
ALLEWAY
ALLAN
ahchee
CLAYTON
PARRY
CHAMBERS
sharples ?????????????????
PERRIE
sheedy
CRANE
wark
dabrowski
TREEBY
POWELL
salter

By my reckoning thats
13 Interstate players
9 locals

I think perhaps current state games are lopsided in SAs favour

Should we have STATE of ORIGIN games instead ?
It would be fairer ?

PS
Im not condoning the very fine ex interstate players from representing SA
Players such as
GOWANS/BLACKWELL/CHAMBO etc have been in the SA comp for a long time

I don't have a huge knowledge of the VFL competition and their local players with Victorian "origin" but check out the link below, I started a simiar topic, more in relation to the South Australian team. I picked my SA "local" team and actually came up with an "All Star" team as well that included NON SOUTH AUSTRALIAN'S who are currently playing in the SANFL. Check it out, post away with your opinions...

Made for some interesting thinking about the players and their selection criteria...

Jade Sheedy came down to Sturt from Mildura as an 19 year old ( may still of been 18 ) and has stayed since !!!

Big Phil is correct in saying he is not an original SA lad - But he has played all but one year of senior footy else where and the rest @ Sturt and in the SANFL competion !!!

His under age career belongs interstate but his senior career ( 165 league games ) belongs in South Australia !!!
It is what it is !!!

What's wrong with that, we have been the BEST team in this comp for the last 10 years...

Despite many opposition supporters having the opinion that we BUY premierships with heaps of interstate recruits, you'll find that the facts will show that more than a fair majority of ALL our premiership players will be locally born and bred guys from our zones... :)

Just bragging in reality, BP. No wonder the dogs always push an "import limit" rule instead of the salary cap.

And let's not overlook the fact that another local lad was in the original squad this season before getting cut from it.

And to further your comments about being the best team of the last decade, I think people would be surprised at how strong a team we would have had without recruits. Some clubs should have a look beyond the Gowans and Callinan and realise that many of our guns are from both our metro and country zones and take a leaf out of THAT book.

Just for fun, here's my Centrals local side (at least I THINK these guys are all locals.......). AFL listers only if they were Central juniors.

FF: Healy Havelberg McCabe
HF: Graham Schell Dew
C: McKinnon MacGowan Switala
HB: Thomas Haraida Symes
FB: Sibenaler Aufderheide R. Cochrane

R: Arnold Slade Steinberner
Int: MacKenzie S. Cochrane Sansbury

Recruits side:

FF: D. Stevens Cowan Ford
HF: J. Gowans Lawry Bello
C: Ware C. Gowans O'Sullivan
HB: Hayes ?????? Hulm
FB: Hay Grima Hopwood

R: Scoullar Callinan Arnott

Int: Moller Slattery Goodrem?

Starting to struggle for key defenders and would like to think of someone to replace Goodrem but can't.

These games are a joke! You should only be allowed to wear a State Guernsey simply under State of Origin rules! Players from all over Australia can wear a club guernsey, and be great club men, however a State Guernsey shouldn't be given away, no matter how long you've played in either comp! Footy free weekend coming up for me I'm afraid. Remember the "outrage" surrounding the "Dreamteam" recently? This is just as farcical IMHO!
