Talk on the national game

Second level footy v rugby league

Postby Dogwatcher » Sun May 11, 2008 1:20 am

I have Austar (Foxtel for you city folk) and have noted the support given to the NRL's under 20 competition this season.

Fox screens the under 20 games, promote it with plenty of ads and have the scores in their live updates and news service.

It is being treated as a major competition.

Meanwhile, the A League seconds comp the B League will be up and running next season too.

Is it a concern that this sort of coverage isn't being extended to a second level of Australian rules.

Sure the SANFL, WAFL and NTFL are screened on the ABC but only within their states and are certainly not talked about on a national scale in any fashion.

Does this pose a threat to footy in any way or is it just East Coast passions for league and nothing to worry about for our code?

I think they're just trying to fill some space since they have camera, OB vans, etc there already.

There already? Are those games before the NRL matches? Interesting thought.

I think it's a bit more than that - you still have to spend money on that sort of stuff.

THE U/20 GAMES PLAY BEFORE THE MAIN GAME DW.

last year they had what was known as the jersey flegg match underage, then the reserves and then the A grade

So, if the AFL had curtain raisers, would they be shown on Fox?
Fox is giving this competition a lot of prominence.

all depends on their respective contracts i'd say.
with the NRL they may have that FOX shows all these games on GAME dayi n their contract this year.
where as the AFL's contract might be only to show the main game

Maybe I'm making something out of nothing - but it concerns me a little.
However, easier to do in rugby as there's only really two states.

hey that's cool - New Zealand's not on my radar for this. We're talking Aussie rules threat.
As for Melbourne, yes they are a NRL club that has been succesful but at this point the game hasn't exactly taken Victoria by Storm outside of that level has it?

the vic government are pouring money into the redevelopment of olympic park to cater for a 20,000 odd crowd for rugby fans and were to also house the melborne victory BUT the victory said it would be too small for their crowds. which is true considering they sold out the dome a few times

This is what happens when you have 'NATIONAL' sports telecasts coming from NSW/Sydney.

Mr66 that's my thoughts too. But I thought I might look beneath that and see if there is anything else in it and whether it's a threat to Aussie rules.

People who live in Cairns, Darwin and Tasmania could say similar about the AFL.

Agreed. But they - at least the NT and Tassie - have front line Australian rules competitions which receive coverage in their states. They are AUSSIE RULES states.

Can you explain to me what a front line competition is?

For once, I agree with you Doggy. They are flogging the shit out of it but I haven't watched a single minute of the rubbish. I'd much rather watch the Redlegs. (Thanks for nothing ABC2!)
